The Garrick Theatre is located on Charing Cross Road in London’s West End. The Theatre has 718 seats over three levels. This theatre is a traditionally designed theatre and has a lot of steps to get to the stalls you have to go down 2 flights of stairs.
As you enter the theatre the staff (whom were very polite) encouraged you to enter the foyer but you’re not able to reach the dress circle or stalls until approximately 30 minutes prior to the show starting and the foyer wasn’t big or comfortable and I would have probably preferred to have had a coffee or a glass of wine in the many surrounding choices of coffee shops or pub/bars. The programme I purchased was £4 and I bought 2 glasses of wine at £6 each which was disappointing especially considering the fact it was served in a plastic cup and the awkward and not comfortable surroundings of the foyer.
We were there to see Let It Be – a musical about The Beatles rise to fame from their gigs at the Cavern Club in Liverpool to the very height of Beatlemania.
The tone for the evening was set by the announcement “Photography, dancing and standing is strictly……. ENCOURAGED!”
The band took us through a decade of Beatles music from the early 60’s with a live musical performance and during the two parts of the show had us up out of our seats singing along and had the entire audience on their feet.
There were many tracks including Twist and Shout, She Loves You, Drive My Car, Yesterday, Let It Be, Come Together and, of course, Hey Jude amongst many other hits. As this journey took you through a decade of the Beatles music it was interesting to see the changing styles in both costume and music styles and I could really see how George Harrison inspired the likes of Jimmy Hendrix deciding to make his way to the UK to enhance his own career.
We were treated to a journey of the Beatles from Liverpool’s Cavern Club to the USA in huge stadiums with delirious fans which propelled the band to super stardom of a group of 4 ordinary lads from Liverpool who grew into extraordinary talents who’s influence still inspire very recent and current bands such as Oasis and Artic Monkeys and many many others.
This show is very much like a Beatles concert with track after track of great hits and I loved the show and would recommend you to go and see it, and testament to this is that I will go back and enjoy it again.
