I was excited to see that I had been allocated the Gel blaster Surge to review.  The toy blaster took a few weeks to arrive but I was very excited to test it when it did

The box contained:
1x USB-C charging cable (no plug)
1x Gel blaster surge gun (fitted with 175fps barrel, green fins and tips)
1x Hopper full of hydrated Gellets
1x Box of 10,000 de-hydrated Gellets
1x Eye protection glasses
1x Interchangeable barrel (100fps) + tool to unscrew the barrel
1x Sticker

I had seen these Gel blasters and was intrigued to test them and find out what they were all about and how they worked.

As the name suggests the blaster fires gellets (gel pellets).  These pellets are bought in a de-hydrated state and when soaked in water they then expand by 10 times their size.  So the small box supplied looks like nothing but will give you a literal bucket full of gellets.  The Gellet’s are effectively 90% water and fall apart when lightly squashed so break apart on impact.  The gellets leave no marks and de-hydrate again when they break apart. From my reading, they have no environmental impact.  To hydrate a pack of the gellets they must be soaked for 2hrs and be completely submerged in water to make sure there fully hydrated.  If there not fully hydrated then it will influence the performance of the blaster by causing loading issues from the hopper.

The blaster is a very nice small design.  I was able to comfortably hold, fire and switch between the single and automatic fire mechanism with a single hand.  The blaster has a built in lithium ion battery which will give you 4hrs of play once fully charged.

The hopper holds 800 Gellets and these will last around 10 or so minutes so a 10,000 Gellet packet should last around 2hrs of use depending on how trigger happy you are.

Several parts of the gun are interchangeable.  You can change the barrels and the blaster is supplied with two different options of a 175fps and another orange barrel, which is a lower impact barrel of 100fps.  The blaster has interchangeable fins and tip, which I believe, is for when you play in teams so you can have different colours however, these are not supplied.  The hopper feedneck can be switched to alternatives too including one designed for glow in the dark gellets (not included).  The blaster easily fire’s over 100 feet and are surprisingly accurate.  This product combines the benefits of those foam dart style guns with that of a paint ball gun allowing you to use it in your own garden without the mess of a paintball but giving you a hopper full of hundreds of projectiles, which will last for hours of play.

It does need to be highlighted that these are marketed as toys however, the recommended age is 14yrs+ and for good reason.  The blaster does come with Eye protection and in my opinion it should be worn at all times.  The gellets do hurt on impact (not as much as paint balls), which gives you an idea of their velocity.  The gellets break on impact, which sends pieces flying all over so you should have something covering your eyes.

The blaster is a great product to get your teenage kids outside running around and having fun.  For the money and the entertainment they are very good value when compared to alternatives like paintballing.  These blasters have many optional accessories like alternative attachments and automated targets to keep you and the kids interested.
