The only time I had seen G4 was when they were on the X-factor some 12 years ago – their voices and style impressed me then so I was looking forwarding to seeing them live.
On arrival at the Parr Hall in Warrington, the entrance to the venue displayed a wide range of merchandise including G4’s new album “Love Songs” and a CD from the support – Mary-Jess (an English woman who had won the Chinese version of X-factor – with some 70 million viewers! – whilst living in China studying Mandarin). The whole feel of the night was very personal and unpretentious with a heartfelt welcome from G4 in the programme, giving their fans insights into their likes/dislikes and biographies of the supporting band and guests. At each show a local choir joins G4 and G4 have a ‘meet and greet’ at the end of every show (the Warrington show was only the 2nd of an extensive 60 date tour of the UK).
From the onset of the show with Jonathan singing “Your Song” as he led G4 onto the stage, a sophisticated and talented orchestra of violins, cello, flute and piano and romantic red roses decorating the stage – the evening immediately had a romantic and intimate feel. The four very talented members of G4 continued to sing through 20 songs that included “My Way”, “A Million love songs”, “Love me for a reason” (Merrell Osmond is joining their tour at London), “Yellow”, “All of me” and “Everything I do”. The local choir ‘Do Your Thing’ and the amazingly talented Mary-Jess joined G4 to sing “Danny Boy” and “Love changes everything” and gave spectacular renditions of “Barcelona”, Phantom’s “That’s all I ask of you” and “Nessun Dorma” – which resulted in a full standing ovation and cheers that nearly took the roof off the hall. Throughout the show there were constant personal touches, the men giving red roses to fans, Jonathon walking through the venue to place kisses on fan’s cheeks as he sang, postcards from Mary-Jess offering free copies of her haunting song “Spring Ballet” and each member of G4 – Jonathan. Ben, Mike and Nick all personally addressing the audience making it feel very familiar and as it was Ben’s birthday the audience and the band sang him Happy Birthday. G4 came across as both genuine and gifted men and their voices are even better than I remembered. Well done a great show!
The hall disappointingly was only half-full; however, it was a really enjoyable evening and on hearing people leaving saying “that was great” and “wasn’t that good!” – It was a great success. I would recommend that people go along to see G4 for themselves. The stunningly talented Mary-Jess compliments the band really well and the orchestra gives small venues a grander atmosphere. I can easily see myself attending their Christmas shows in November and December and maybe next time I’ll get a red rose!
