Bobby Davro: Taking the Mimic at the Wycombe Swan Review

Reviewed by Lindsey Jobber
I was really pleased to have been asked to review Bobby Davro: Taking the Mimic, at The Swan Theatre in High Wycombe. I took along my husband. We were both pleasantly surprised by how easy the theatre was to find. The parking was right next to the theatre, nice and near, with plenty of spaces. It’s wasn’t too expensive to pay to park either. On our arrival, we were welcomed through the main door, by the friendly theatre staff. The theatre is lovely, it is small but very clean, and you can clearly see it’s well looked after.
We were directed straight to the box office, where the staff had our tickets waiting for us. We made our way to the bar, and were served straight away. The staff again were friendly, and couldn’t do enough for us. The drinks were a little pricey, but you tend to expect that.
We made our way to our seats, and waited for the show to start. Our view was great. The seats were comfortable with plenty of leg room. We noticed the size of the audience was quite small, but that didn’t matter as the atmosphere was good; you could tell everyone was up for a great night.
Bobby didn’t come on stage straight away, he had a support comedy double act with him, called Raymond Timpkins. They were good. They used props and music, and had everyone laughing lots.
My husband and myself grew up in the 80’s, watching Bobby Davro on the television. He was always very funny then, but watching him live was so much better; he was hilarious. From start to finish, he had everyone laughing. He really is a great comedian and entertainer. Without giving too much away, he did several impressions; my favourite had to be Ozzy Osbourne. He was brilliant. Bobby sang too, and boy he could sing! He sang quite a few songs, including George Michael and Elton John’s 1992 hit ‘Don’t let the sun go down on me’. It was fab!
The interaction between Bobby and the audience was brilliant. At one point, he had 3 ladies from the audience up on stage with him as his backing dancers. Everyone was in fits of giggles, as he laughed and joked with them.
In the interval, we popped out to the toilets and back to the bar. The toilets were very clean and tidy. Again the bar staff were quick and happy to serve us.
By the end of the show, Bobby had everyone up off their seats singing and dancing.
We had a really good night. I wouldn’t say it was for all ages (rated 15), as there is quite a lot of adult content in the show. I would definitely recommend all of you adults go and see Bobby Davro, he’s brilliant!
Rating: 5/5
