Frankie & Benny’s Oldham Review

Reviewed by Jo Knox

I went to Frankie & Benny’s at Central Retail Park, Oldham with my husband and daughters (aged 12 and 9). Inside the set up was like an Italian/American diner with black and white pictures of the old rock and roll kings and queens, booths which the seats reminded me of old American classic cars. We were reviewing the new menu which was launched 5th August.

We were seated immediately in the middle of the diner so we had a good view of everything around us. We could see the chefs working hard in the kitchen and the staff behind the bar preparing drinks. Our waiter introduced himself ‘Mark’, and was friendly and chatted with us throughout the evening. Our drinks order was taken and we never had an empty glass. The menu was a combination of classic American and Italian dishes.

For starters, we opted for the BENNY’S STICKY BUCKET described on the menu as a true meat treat! It came in a metal water bath shaped tin and we got four of each – Ribs, BBQ Chicken Wings, New York American Potato Dippers and Chicken Strips with maple flavour glazed pineapple, onion rings, corn on the cob and celery sticks, with blue cheese dressing and BBQ sauce. This was all delicious and a great start to the meal. My favourite was the corn on the cob and anything dipped into the BBQ sauce which was sticky and deep in flavour was divine. The ribs and the chicken strips were a hit with my husband and the kids.

For our main meals, I opted for the RIGATONI CHICKEN PICCANTE. I have never had it before but its sounded lovely; chicken, chorizo, rosemary, mushroom and white wine sauce and rigatoni pasta with mozzarella and a crunchy cheese crumb. It was piping hit when it came and portion was a decent size, I couldn’t finish it but it was really tasty. Just enough sauce so that the pasta was nice and soft and not too dry. I would have like a bit more chorizo but otherwise, this was delicious.

My husband opted for the MIXED GRILL which came with a 7oz rump steak, sausage, chicken breast and maple flavour glazed gammon steak, served with a flat mushroom, roasted tomato, onion rings and golden fries. There was an option to add pepper sauce but he didn’t have that this time. This was a big plate of food and the meat portions were large. The steak was asked to be cooked medium but this was a little overdone for my husbands taste. Whilst it was nice, my husband would with hindsight have ordered the sauce as so much meat without it was quite dry. This is £20.95 on the menu which we thought was a little overpriced for this dish.

The children opted for orders from the Juniors menu which had a good range of choice. These are all £7.75 which is good value. The soft drinks with the kids and junior meals are all refillable. Mine tried a glass of the Pepsi, Tango and lemonade. There is a kids menu also which will be smaller portions for those with little tummies.

My youngest opted for the Margherita Pizza and 3 Toppings; pepperoni, bacon and chicken, her very own meat feast. This was classically cooked in a big clay oven and she liked that she could see it going in and out. It was a 9” pizza and the base was lovely and thin but still soft enough that she was able to fold it Calzone style! She thoroughly enjoyed it.

Our eldest went with the Wrap It Up Chicken with crispy fried chicken bites with diced tomato, cucumber, carrot and baby gem lettuce, served with a warm tortilla, pot of cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce on the side. Then all she had to do was decide what would go on the wrap. The chicken came in balls and would probably have been more practical in strips for a wrap but they were tasty and another dish which was enjoyed.

In addition, we ordered the cheesy garlic bread which was 9” also and we couldn’t finish this as we were all stuffed! Therefore, we asked for the garlic bread and the last piece of the junior pizza to be boxed up for us so we could take it home.

No child is ever too full for dessert so they shared a candy Ice Cream Candy shop ; 2 scoops of ice cream and bottles of sweets, all served with a jug of chocolate sauce to pour. Don’t know how they managed it but they did.

The service was excellent and the food on the whole was very nice. Overall we would rate this branch of Frankie and Benny’s as 4 out of 5.

Rating: 4/5
