Frankie & Benny’s New Breakfast Menu The Hive Widnes Review

Reviewed by Melanie Allen

I arrived at The Hive in Widnes for my Frankie & Benny’s review at 9.30am on a Wednesday with my husband. The car park was almost empty (due to the time) so parking was plentiful. As we entered, we were greeted by Leanne (the manager) who seated us promptly. We were immediately asked what drinks we would like, so we took advantage of the unlimited refills, one latte and one cappuccino.

There were a few other couples in the restaurant, and they were being well tended to. We were shown the new breakfast menu, which had a vast array of breakfast choices for all tastes and appetites. My husband, who has a very large appetite, chose the Papa Grand breakfast, which consisted of two sausages, four rashers of bacon, black pudding, two eggs, grilled tomato, button mushrooms, Heinz baked beans, potato rosti and crispy herb potatoes served with brown toast and butter. Not a big breakfast eater, I chose the New York Savoury Waffle, which was a sweet and savoury delight! A cinnamon waffle topped with their signature BBQ sauce, bacon and melted cheese, served with extra BBQ sauce on the side. I was also persuaded to order an extra portion of hash browns.

After ordering yet another latte and cappuccino, our food arrived quite quickly. As Leanne placed my husband’s most enormous breakfast in front of him, he was astounded by the size of it, and she was sure he wouldn’t be able to finish it alone. She was right!! It was a humongous about of food for one person. Although, delicious, he ended up giving me a sausage (which was lovely but very garlicky and repeated on me all day) and still left one (he had three). There was no black pudding even though it states on the menu it is included, but he never mentioned it or even remembered it was on the menu. The only complaint he had was that the butter was really hard and wouldn’t spread on this toast.

My waffle, although strange in flavour to start with (cinnamon with bacon) grew on me and had very interesting flavours. The sweet and savoury seemed to work with this treat of a breakfast. I easily managed my extra crispy portion of hash browns (3 of them), which were very fresh and hot.

On our table were various menus, and the midweek 2 course deal Monday to Friday after 5.30pm looked particularly appealing for £11.99.

We were asked a few times if everything was ok, and when we had finished, we asked Emma (our new waitress) if the unlimited hot drinks for £1.95 were on offer every day, on their own (i.e. could someone just come into the restaurant for just a coffee). She said yes, quite a few people do this as it is cheaper than getting just one drink, and they can have as many as they like. She said that Frankie & Benny’s are one big family, they are well looked after and love their jobs.

Before we left we both inspected the toilets and they were immaculate.

I would rate this restaurant 5/5 due to the service, the food and the ambiance.

Rating: 5/5
