The Flow Rider is an outdoor body boarding/surf boarding activity for children and adults, currently based at Xscape Milton Keynes. For just £15 you get an hour's experience of what it could be like to surf the ocean wave!

With a distinctly Hawaiian feel about the place, but with typically British weather, we were welcomed by a friendly team of staff, led by Piers Hampson. Despite the rain, staff were happy to show us our wetsuits (all included, along with changing facilities and lockers) and then join Max McGrellis, a cheerful and enthusiastic instructor on the ride itself.

After the health and safety briefing, Max showed us some basic techniques for body boarding (laying flat on the board and making it look incredibly easy!) and we were able to get straight in to the ride and try it for ourselves. After the inevitable face plants and wipe outs, I started to get the hang of it and when we were ready, Max showed us some more tricks and skills until eventually we were riding the waves standing up too.

Max was incredibly patient and considerate, always going with the pace that each person set themselves. It is an active sport, and you will be asked to sign a disclaimer for obvious reasons, but it really is a whole heap of fun. Highly recommended for anyone with a sense of adventure or who just wants to try something different without having to go to the coast. Available to book online www.xscape.co.uk/Milton-Keynes until 1st September 2013.
