Exciting Escapes Portsmouth Review

My friends are massive Escape Room enthusiasts having completed over 30 rooms between the 3 of them. I’ve only played two rooms in Cardiff a few years ago but immensely enjoyed the experience so was keen to try one closer to home.

We booked “The Voices We Hear” room described as a “1980s thriller style Doctors Office” which filled us with suspense. My three friends live in Portsmouth, so they decided to meet up earlier in the evening and have dinner at the, conveniently located, Italian restaurant opposite Exciting Escapes and I joined them for coffee just before we were due to go in.

I’ve since seen this restaurant offers 10% off on the day you play making it a great addition to your night out.

At our allotted time we were greeted by Dan and ushered into the 1950s style Government Office style reception looked over by famous detectives adorning the walls. We completed our paperwork and we’re taken upstairs to the room. Dan left us to watch an introductory video which cleverly gave us some background to the mystery we were due to solve and also covered Health and Safety aspects such as what to do if the fire alarm sounds etc.

We went through the door, deposited our belongings (including phones) into lockers, entered the room and the timer started.

The 60 minutes flew by in a haze of solving clues and cracking codes. There were some slightly intense and scary moments but that only added to the enjoyment. According to the website this is their only room that is scary (they advise 16+) and they can dial it up or down depending on your nerves if you mention if before you go in.

We did quite well, I think, only getting majorly stuck on one clue – and Dan was able to point us in the right direction via the intercom. We managed to escape with 7 minutes to spare. The last 5 minutes were frantic with the four of us on tenterhooks while we solved the final code to open the door.

Dan debriefed and congratulated us, awarding us with Exciting Escapes fridge magnets and allowing us to dress as detectives (flasher macs and trilbies) for our victory photo which will be emailed to us.

I’m now officially addicted and will be joining my pals with their obsession, seeking out more rooms locally and whenever I’m in a new city.

Exciting Escapes in Portsmouth is on London Road in North End. Whilst there is limited on-street parking nearby, a short 5-minute walk finds the, small, Portsmouth City Car Park on Stubbington Avenue which is free after 8pm. My friends managed to find parking in the local residential streets.

My teammates said this is a very high-quality escape room compared to the others they’ve completed, and I can safely say this is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

So, if you’re looking an alternative night out with friends, team building with colleagues, date night or even a fun family activity please give it a go. Exciting Escapes also have rooms in Basingstoke and Southampton.

I noted that the Portsmouth and Southampton rooms have a Summer Special Offer of £18 per person so book up now!
