I regularly buy diffusers and scented candles to use around the home, so I was keen to try essential drops as an alternative.

Looking on their website highlights how Essential drops brand pride themselves on being free of artificial Ingredients (including alcohol, parabens, SLS, palm oil, artificial fragrances or mineral oils). The website also states how they are ‘cruelty-free’ with no products tested on animals. In fact the products are all also vegan, with no animal products or by-products used at all. For those wanting to buy local, this is a UK brand, with all products stated to be made here in the UK. These facts are also all clearly present on the packaging. The glass bottle is also recyclable, another plus for the ever increasing eco market.

The products are described as ‘bathroom aromatics’ and designed to ‘scent and mask unpleasant odours.’ The website also suggests how they can be used in kitchens or added to candles or oil diffusers rather than being used directly. The recipe for the oils has been developed based on research with the company founder a chartered chemist. Three scents are currently available within their collection; Ginger & Black Pepper, Grapefruit & Kumquat and Pomegranate & Lychee. Alternatively, all three can be purchased together with a multi save discount of £4. I was sent the Grapefruit and Kumquat scent to try. Upon opening, the packaging is simple yet stylish, with each scent having its own colour added to the packaging. Little details such as the gold handle on the pipette, and using a glass rather than plastic bottle certainly help the product aim to be among well-known expensive brands of diffuser or candle. I would say that the design allows for the product to be on display for easy access within a bathroom or kitchen.

The product is very simple to use, with instructions to add a few drops directly to the toilet bowl or basin after use. The scent itself is nice and as described and I would agree with the claim that no obvious residue is left. In the first instance the product works well, with a strong scent freshening the area. However after using the product for almost a week my main issue is that the scent doesn’t last long at all. Clearly if the toilet or basin is used again the scent disappears but even without this the scent does not seem to hang around long. For me it therefore doesn’t compare to the constant scent given off by a diffuser or candle. I would therefore liken it more to a room spray, where the fragrance, whilst there, is very pleasant, however is not long lasting. Due to the lack of longevity of the scent, it is easy to repeatedly use the product throughout the day. The 50ml bottle I therefore fear would not last long and left me questioning the high price tag for what would possibly need to be a fairly regular purchase.
