Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas tradition for many families these days, this is when a Scout Elf visits the home during December and acts as Santa’s eyes and ears to check that the children are being good. Every night the Elf heads back to the North Pole to report on the children’s behaviour, then returns in the morning and will sit in a different place in the house. This sounds simple enough, however Elf on the Shelf has evolved from those simple beginnings and now elves are expected to get up to all kinds of outrageous shenanigans each night. All of which are the product of parents’ imaginations and creativity, done in secret whilst the children are asleep so they can wake up in the morning and find the elf to see what they have been up to.

Our family has two elves, Pickle and Ben, who have been visiting for several years ever since somebody suggested it could help to improve my eldest son’s behaviour over the Christmas period. Over the years they have done all manner of crazy (and not so crazy) stunts. However, this year with life being so busy and us running out of new ideas I was absolutely delighted when I was asked to review the Elf on the Shelf 24 Day Ultimate Ideas Kit as I had been considering telling the children that the elves weren’t coming this year, at which my youngest son was quite distraught.

The 24 Day Ultimate Kit literally sounded liked it could be a life saver (or Elf saver) as it would provide over 70 props for the elves with ideas on how to use them. I could not wait for it to arrive.

When the kit arrived, it came in a very large box from the North Pole Post Office, stating it was a Special Delivery from Santa Claus. Fortunately, we were able to get it in and hide it away without our children noticing, or there would have been lots of questions asked! I was like a big kid and literally couldn’t wait to open the box when the children went to bed. Inside the box was the kit, an elf on the shelf white-board and pen and also some bath pens. I’m sure they will all come in handy when setting up the elves over the coming weeks.

The Ultimate Ideas Kit came in a very sturdy box, with lots of colourful pictures of elves doing all kinds of different things. Inside were 24 separately numbered plastic bags, each containing props and an idea card for a stunt for the elf to do on that day of the month. There was also another bag containing cardboard backdrops, a Christmas tree and a table to be used alongside the props. The ideas cards could either be used on their own each day or mixed with other ideas. There were all kinds of props ranging from cooking items such as cupcakes, a coffee machine and a toaster to sporty props such as a football goal and ball, ice skates and a yoga mat. This was like all my prayers answered. It is going to help so much over the coming weeks, not having to think up ideas for the elves to do and will avoid late night panics when we realise with horror that “we haven’t moved the elves” (although I still have the challenge of what the second elf is going to do, as the props are only for one elf!)

I was really impressed with the 24 Day Ultimate Ideas Kit, the number of items included and the quality is great. The set is really good value and would be ideal for any parents new to elf on a shelf, or those who are feeling a big jaded of the whole thing! I wish I had found this when our elves first arrived!
