Ekachai Restaurant Wandsworth Launch Party Review

Reviewed Jat Shah

My partner and I recently visited the launch party of Ekachai, a Southeast Asian restaurant that has been serving delicious street food from Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong for over 16 years. They have two locations in London (Liverpool Street and Wandsworth) as well as connections in Selfridges London and Birmingham. The Wandsworth restaurant we visited is located in a busy shopping mall, easily accessible by many bus routes and a short walk away from Wandsworth Town station.

The décor of the restaurant is very fitting to the mouth-watering food they sever, which you can smell even before you have located the restaurant in the building. The design team have thoughtfully created a welcoming space with open kitchen on one side of the restaurant, toilets carefully placed behind tastefully selected antique looking cupboards, old re-cycled rice cookers used as small lamp shades and beautifully carved large lamp shades made from bamboo which are imported from Asia.

Upon arrival we were greeted by their thirst quenching coconut water and lychee juice. On the menu they have great variety of drinks to choose from including several Asian beers, soft drinks, teas, coffees, wines and healthy juices. The menu is very extensive with lots of little plates, sharing plates, rice and noodle dishes, stir fires, curries and salads to choose from. They even have a fantastic 3 course children’s menu for just £6.

Since this was a launch party, they had lots of small dishes for the guests to try. I made it my mission to try as many dishes as I possibly could. Amongst the ones I tried were soft shell crab, vegetable spring rolls, pork and crab dumplings, friend tofu, pad Thai, chicken satay, Vietnamese summer rolls, Thai green curry, beef pho, crispy duck salad and Singapore noodles. I do not remember disliking a single dish, but my personal favourites were pad Thai, Vietnamese summer rolls and Thai green curry. The taste of these dishes took me back to the time when I had some amazing street food during my backpacking trip to Southeast Asia. With so many dishes to choose from and all freshly prepared to order in front of you, everyone is likely to find something that they would love. And if you like sharing your dishes, so that you can different dishes at the same time, this is undoubtedly a great place to do so.
