Ed’s Easy Diner is a new American themed diner which has recently opened in the Drakes Circus shopping mall in Plymouth, so I was really pleased to be chosen to do this review. Its situation within the shopping mall means there is no problem with parking and it is easily accessible from the main town for people walking or using public transport.
My daughter and I arrived at 5pm for our meal on a Thursday when the mall is open for late night shopping. We could immediately see the venue as the exterior is very bright with red and white decor and neon lighting-very in keeping with a 50’s American diner.
Although it was not possible to book in advance, we were quickly greeted and settled into our booth type seating area. Once settled we were given our menus and our drinks orders were taken. I chose apple juice which was really refreshing and my daughter settled for diet coke. The waiter soon returned to take our order and explained about the ‘solo’ option which is just the main item and the ‘Ed’s Plate’ option which includes fries, coleslaw and onion rings. After much deliberation over a very good menu, I settled for the Ed’s plate all-day breakfast burger and my daughter choose the Ed’s plate original chicken burger.
While waiting for our food we had time to look around the venue. It was very bright and spotlessly clean. Tables were quickly cleared as people finished their meals and the staff were all cheerful and attentive. On some of the tables – and on the counter seating area – there were mini-jukeboxes where for 20p you can choose the music to be played. The money raised goes to the Diner’s chosen charity which this year is Action Against Hunger. Although the music was loud and upbeat it didn’t drown out conversation.
Our food arrived promptly and well presented. My meal of burger-which was really moist, bacon-which was really crispy and egg cooked just right in a sesame seed bun was faultless. Also the accompanying onion rings were probably the best I had tasted! My daughters’ chicken meal was also cooked perfectly, arrived hot and was very flavoursome.
Once we had finished, our plates were quickly removed and we were offered the dessert menu. Despite our expanding waistlines, we had to try them!! The waiter recommended the milkshake which my daughter chose along with the baked cheesecake and I chose the pancakes. Both dishes were really good – my pancakes with maple syrup and ice cream were soft and fluffy whilst my daughters’ cheesecake served with fruit compote and ice cream was light and delicious.
We really could not fault the Diner – brilliant food served in a happy, relaxed atmosphere with cheerful, attentive staff.
Well done Ed’s Diner -a good addition to the Drakes Circus shopping mall.
