Ed’s Easy Diner in the Intu Centre Derby is a place I’d wanted to try for lunch for a while – my son is a fan of burgers and so it seemed an ideal treat for the inset day at the start of half term.
We arrived about 12.15 on a Friday afternoon as Ed’s is in the Shopping Centre we’d done a bit of shopping first parking in the centre carpark. Although the restaurant was busy it wasn’t completely full, we were greeted and seated quickly and in a friendly, welcoming manner. The restaurant is styled as an American Diner with clean lines and unlike some of the American Diners it’s not made the mistake of overdoing the decoration so it doesn’t feel cluttered or fussy, the background music was provided by Buddy Holly and a range of 50’s stars, playing at just the right level so you could hear it but weren’t deafened by it. Our server spoke to both me and my son, which I really liked, often in restaurants waiting staff only speak to the adults, then we settled ourselves down in a comfy booth and tackled the menu. Ed’s serves burgers, hot dogs, salads and chicken with an impressive array of milkshakes.
We ordered a chocolate and a butterscotch milkshake, while we sipped those and waited for our burgers we had chance to look around and soak up the atmosphere. One thing I noticed was that even though Ed’s was filling up for lunchtime all the serving staff were friendly, polite and patient with all the customers. Our burgers arrived and they were great value, I’d ordered a Cheeseburger platter which came with a pile of crispy onion rings, chips and coleslaw and my son had ordered a plain burger with chips. The plain burger was exactly that, my son was delighted – this is a big test for our family as I’ve lost count of the number of times a plain burger still gets sent out with a ‘bit’ of lettuce on which, for a child on the Autistic Spectrum is a really big deal and will lead to him not eating his meal.
We tucked in, the burgers were excellent, fresh and meaty and not at all greasy, the salad on my cheeseburger was crisp and fresh and the chips were piping hot. Everything tasted freshly prepared. Throughout the meal we were asked a couple of times if everything was alright with the food – enough attention to make you feel cared about but not so much that you felt bothered and top of my list of great things when I go out to eat, the table was cleared promptly when we’d finished.
Ed’s Easy Diner is good honest food in a clean, happy restaurant. Great for a break and pick me up while you’re shopping in Derby or a cheeky midweek treat just for yourself – I’ll be back for that butterscotch milkshake.
We both gave it a real thumbs up and 5/5, Thanks, Ed’s Easy Diner for giving us an easy lunchtime treat.
