We were supposed to be joined on our travels to the Time Lord’s universe by my son, a Doctor Who fan, sadly COVID related difficulties put paid to that, which was a shame as Doctor Who: Time Fracture by Immersive Everywhere is a must-do experience for passionate and more casual Doctor Who fans as well.
Immersive theatre is gaining momentum and appeals to all ages with no seat tickets. Instead what is on offer is a multi-sensory opportunity to really step into the show, taking you through a series of alternative worlds, where you can become totally immersed and a part of the unfolding story.
As we stepped into the UNIT HQ, in the 1940s, we learned that a World War II bomb had left a fracture in spacetime, which was now breaking and putting all of time in danger. The Doctor appeals for us to enlist to save the universe and to head off through the centuries in search of the answer. Cue, a frantic, chaotic scene when we are split into small groups and given powerful pep talks regarding our missions to mend the fracture.
The experience relies on audience participation and it really is best not to overthink but to go along with the ride and enjoy over two hours of lively escapism – the more you join in the more enjoyment there is to be had! There are many areas to discover and no one visit will ever be the same, which really does add to the fun. We encountered authentic, convincing costumed actors along the way, playing a host of different characters, who encourage audience interaction. They all work tremendously hard, being able to adapt to what was thrown at them by the audience but with also emotionally charged total commitment to the unfolding story. The playful Elizabethan set piece was great fun – particularly learning the dance! Huzzah!
At times, the experience was rather chaotic, it was not easy for the guides to keep track of the audience’s journeys, although it all seemed to come together in the end. After our exertions of the last hour, the intense noise and heightened sensations, it was with some relief when we landed in the intergalactic bar, with great live singers, for an interval. The bar offered a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Our last destination in Gallifrey was rather long winded and perhaps too wordy for some of the younger time travellers. This is where we see various Time Lords debating and interacting further with the audience. I am still not sure exactly what side I was on – I think I voted for both in the end but no matter, we end up saving the day.
Appealing to both avid fans and anyone seeking the winning combination of thrill and theatre, this super charged, vibrant immersive experience is well recommended. Plunge into the incredible universe of Doctor Who! Just one question remains, will you rise to the challenge and save the day?
