I took my two son’s aged 5 and 6 to see Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live at the Theatre Royal in Windsor. We were able to park easily, very close to the theatre but the cost for this convenience is high – I paid £6 for an hour and a half!
However, on arrival at the theatre we were given a warm welcome by the staff and shown to our seats, the Windsor Theatre Royal is a relatively small theatre but beautifully charming.
The show looked really interactive which was what initially attracted me to take my children to see it and it didn’t disappoint in this respect! It was the most interactive show I’ve ever seen at the theatre and the best way I can think to describe the show is it’s like being at a Dinosaur Zoo! The presenter (aka the zoo keeper) was very knowledgeable and constantly delivered facts about the various dinosaurs in a simple way that the children could understand.
However there is no ‘story’ to the show, it is essentially the presenter delivering facts about the dinosaurs whilst showing the puppet dinosaurs – which are fantastically lifelike and very effective. They were so realistic that you forgot about the puppeteers’ altogether.
Children were invited up on to the stage throughout the show and were able to pet, cuddle, feed and chase the dinosaurs! There was also dinosaurs that came out into the audience so you don’t miss out if you’re seated further back in the auditorium.
The dinosaurs ranged in size from babies right through to T-Rex’s, I had wondered how they would portray the very large dinosaurs and without giving too much it away it was clever how they did.
The show lasted for an hour and I think this was just right. After the show the audience were invited up to the stage to see the dinosaurs close up, they could also touch them if they dared! There were also baby dinosaurs in the theatre foyer and the puppeteers welcomed photos which was really nice.
I would recommend Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live to any dinosaur mad child aged 3 – 8 years.
