Stomp Rocket BLO-Rockets Review

When this item landed on my doorstep to review, I was pretty impressed by its loud, proud and simple straightforward packaging. It shouted fun and energy and displayed an image of two children using the BLO-Rockets so you can see at a glance exactly what you are getting.

The “4 Games in 1” part grabbed the attention of my 6 year old but upon reading more on the back of the box of what the 4 games actually entailed; it became apparent that it is essentially giving ideas for things to do and play with the BLO-Rockets such as “dodge rockets” and “catch a rocket”.
The contents of the box is 2 hard plastic rocket launchers, 4 foam rockets and an instruction leaflet that further details the games as well as giving important tips, safety advice and other information. It contains nothing more and nothing less. This toy really does go back to basics and is all about learning through play and experimenting with the “S.T.E.M” concepts – Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.

I must admit, as I looked at the contents of the box, I felt somewhat disappointed in it’s basic nature. But I am not a child aged 5-13 and as I looked at my own childrens faces as they argued excitedly over who was having the red launcher and who was having the blue one and scrambling to grab their two foam rockets each; I saw that for them, this was brilliant. This was fantastic. They couldn’t wait. They raced around the house firing rockets at their dad (even though this is not advised!) and giggling as they hit a target they were aiming for or when the others’ rocket went off in the wrong direction. I noticed how without any bells and whistles, gadgets or batteries, they started to use their minds to work out for themselves what they needed to do to get the rockets to shoot a little or a long way. “Just put the rocket on the launcher only half way!” one helped the other who struggled to muster up enough puff to fire hers across the room….and then I found myself eagerly waiting for a turn and having so much fun that I wished I had a whole bag full of foam rockets to fire here and there! It tapped into something fundamental that sadly we seem to have lost in the modern world and that is how a toy so simple and made of so few parts can be fun, energetic, educational and this is what we need more of to allow children to think up ideas and games for themselves and simply play.
If you are looking for something that’s safe to use – even at full blow, the foam rockets are soft so this is fine for indoor and outdoor play and it is really good fun that will be long lasting (as long as you retrieve the foam rockets from behind the sofa!)

The Stomp Rocket is a family owned brand that has been encouraging active play for over 25 years and has won numerous awards along the way. The Blo-Rockets are the latest in the Stomp Rocket collection and the price for this product ranges hugely from £8.83 at www.365games.co.uk to £19.82 from www.amazon.co.uk. I’d be happy to pay between £8-£12 for this toy as anything more seems very overpriced.
