I gave my son aged 7¾ a K’NEX Build and Blast Mega Boom set in return for writing a review! Well, there’s no point in the adult reviewing the product really – what you need to know is what the child thought of it. When I gave it to him his eyes lit up and I was met with the words “awesome”. He loves K’NEX and LEGO so did it meet with the expectation he had having seen it advertised? This is what he wrote:
I am writing about K’NEX Build and Blast Mega Boom. It was fun building it and it took me nearly 4 hours to build it. I liked shooting it. The difficult parts were the middle because it was a tricky combination. The gun came up bigger than I thought it would. I disliked 5 hard parts which were hard because it was tricky figuring out where the pieces go. It was stupendous and amazing and I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
From my point of view it kept him occupied very well. We had running commentary as he put it together! The “hard” parts were more to do with trying to find something to dislike when I asked him if there was anything he disliked I think! There wasn’t any complaining when he was putting it together and the instructions were clear to follow. The age is pitched right, I was perfect for him as it wasn’t too easy and not too difficult and he was clearly learning a lot from following the instructions and working out where things went. He only needed help with the two bendy parts as that was just a little awkward.
I don’t think kids could use this in a gun war with their friends as it just wouldn’t be sturdy enough to run around with and even playing with it, it broke in one place. However, one obviously has the making and remaking value as well as being able to enjoy target practice and seeing just how far the bullets shoot.
The only downside for me is as it always is with these things, is my son won’t allow for it to be taken apart to make something else! Instructions for making the one Mega Boom were included but no other instructions, which was a shame as that might have encouraged him to take it apart and make something different! We will be looking online though and seeing if we can try some other models with the kit! Compared with similar products it is well priced. I too give it five out of five stars.
