Yesterday evening (13 May 2018) I went with my husband to The Lowry Theatre, Salford Quays, Manchester to watch comedian Steve Delaney’s well-loved bumbling character Count Arthur Strong perform his solo show to a packed-out audience. I have been a big fan of his since watching his BBC sitcom and am firmly convinced that Delaney is one of the funniest men alive. Fans of Arthur will recognise the absurdly funny comic character with his malapropisms and sublime silliness.
Delaney came onto the stage as Count Arthur Strong, wearing his trademark suit, hat and glasses and proceeded to give us his own extremely funny tribute to his imaginary friend Bruce Forsythe. The audience were literally in tears laughing at his surreal performance as he constantly muddled and mixed up his sentences. Arthur gave us his own bizarre views of how he would present himself to Dragon’s Den and also showed us an old black and white film of his performance in The Curse of the Mummy Robots From Outer Space, which is just as absurdly hilarious as it sounds. The sequence with the ventriloquist’s dummy was just so ridiculously funny that I cried with laughter. The lady who was sitting next to me was absolutely in hysterics!
The only part of the show which did not come up to scratch was the Last Supper sketch, which most of the audience found funny, but I thought was in rather poor taste. Apart from that one tiny glitch, Count Arthur Strong’s jokes are clean and very, very funny. The beautiful thing about Arthur is that he never resorts to bad language to entertain the audience.
The finale sequence with the giant Mummy Robot was sheer comedy genius and left the audience wanting more. At just over one and a half hours long, this performance is the perfect length of time to appreciate how sublimely funny this character is.
