My five year old son was very excited about receiving the pirate t-shirt to colour in from Kool Kids Rooms, and couldn’t wait to get started. The design was very good; it wasn’t too intricate so as to be fiddly for little hands to do, but still had enough detail to be interesting for older children, and my son completed it in around 60 minutes (with a couple of breaks). The t-shirt came with a pack of five chunky felt tip pens (yellow, green, blue, pink and red). These were a little dry when we first used them, but once we’d dipped them in water (as suggested on the instructions) they were fine – this advice came in particularly handy as we lost the top for the red pen! The t-shirt was made of very good quality, thick 100% cotton; I was initially worried that the colours would go through the material and onto the back of the top but they didn’t, even when we pressed on quite hard.
I was interested to see how well the t-shirt would wash, and whether all of the ink would come out properly, as we had only used permanent markers to decorate fabric before. I was very impressed when it came out of the machine as it looked brand new and the quality of the material meant it also ironed really well.
This would make a lovely present for children who like colouring and crafty activities, and is good value; the sizes cover two years and it looks like it would survive many washes so should last quite a while. It is probably most suitable for school age children who can understand that their creations will disappear once washed and they’ll have to start again. The t-shirt could be worn without the colour (i.e. just as the black and white design) but it does look much better when coloured in. The colours of the pens were very bright, which made for a colourful t-shirt, and worked well with other designs (e.g. rocket and butterfly) but my son was rather frustrated that there was no black pen for the skull and crossbones!
Overall this is a fun item that will keep children entertained, and they’ll love showing off their designs to their friends!
