After a VERY long break from sending the children to school due to Covid-19, this year’s ‘back to school’ arrangements are feeling a little bit like walking through treacle! I am sure I am not the only one who are finding it a bit harder to adjust my thoughts again to get back to all the humdrum of the school routine.

One particular area of the ‘back to school’ which I am struggling with, is packed lunches. My children far prefer to take food from home anyway, but with the current situation, the school cafeteria is not really an option. Besides, my two love snacking, and I fear if left to their own devices, most of their food will come out of packets!

When we got the chance to review Nim’s Fruit Crisps, I though it an ideal opportunity to test it out and see if it is suitable for us.

We loved the bright packaging and it is not ‘baby-ish’, so suitable for older children to take to school without being embarrassed. I never knew this type of thing mattered, until…!  When I saw that the ingredient list literally contained only the fruit used, I could have cried. With all the constant bombardment of added nasties to our food, which we can’t even begin to try and pronounce, this was really something special. If I am honest though, I wasn’t holding up much hope for the taste, or for my children to be too keen on it as a replacement for more unhealthy snacks.

I am absolutely delighted to say that I was wrong! They were not only eager to try it out (insert obligatory argument about who gets to taste what first, here), they also really loved it. Not one to be left out, I also tasted both the Perfect Pineapple and the Amazing Apple variety, and had to agree with the children that it was lovely.

Looking at their website, there is a lot more to feel good about. If this matters to you (it should!) go and read what they have to say about sustainability and modern slavery. It is no surprise then, that their ‘Awards and Accreditation’ section is filled up. The snacks are Vegan, Kosher and Halal certified too.

What matters to the children though, is taste. And these passed the test with flying colours. I didn’t even had to ask them whether they wanted me to buy some for school packed lunches, they requested it long before we finished the products sent.

As Mum, this one is so easy for me. It is tasty, it is healthy (1 of your 5 a day) and it is not doing harm in a wider sense. If only every good thing was this straight forward! There are also other fruit flavours to try, as well as vegetable crisps and edible teas. I have never heard of that before, but it makes perfect sense. The products are air dried, not fried.

Considering all of the above, it doesn’t come as a big surprise that these Nim’s snacks are more expensive than what we would usually pay for their lunchbox extras. As an example, a 14 pack snack box of dried fruit crisps cost £10.50. I do wish it was more affordable, however, on balance I think that this is still on our ‘to buy’ list and I am happy to give it 5 stars.
