With a 3 year old daughter, who’s always keen to make me some dinner through imaginative play, I was really looking forward to the opportunity to review the Casdon Ooni Pizza Oven, to give her a new way of cooking me dinner!

The product arrived within a couple of days, which was brilliant. It was well packaged in an outer cardboard box, so the product itself arrived in a great condition. The pizza oven was packaged in a brightly coloured cardboard box, which perfectly depicts what’s inside the box. When I opened the box, I found the following:

1 x pizza oven – with detachable legs
1 x pizza paddle
1 x pizza cutter
6 x slices of pizza base
6 x tomato sauce toppings slices
6 x mozzarella rounds
6 x basil leaves
6 x pepperoni slices
1 x instruction sheet

The pizza oven itself was really easy to assemble, just a case of slotting the legs into the base of the pizza oven (which coincidentally also comes apart really well for storage). There is a screw compartment at the bottom of the pizza oven, to insert 3 x AAA batteries (not included). This produces a realistic flame effect, in orange lights, which adds to the authenticity.

Once I’d assembled the pizza oven, my 3 year old daughter and 6 year old son got stuck in straight away. It was lovely to watch them playing so nicely alongside each other (for a change!), which was a definite bonus.

To assemble the pizza, each slice slots together, to produce a 6-slice pizza. If I’m being honest, the pieces didn’t stay together very well, which was a source of frustration for my children. I suggested that they assembled it on the pizza paddle and then it was ready to slide straight into the oven. They set about putting their toppings onto the pizza, starting with the tomato sauce, which clipped into the pizza base. Followed by the pepperoni, mozzarella and basil leaves (again, these clip into the base), which made the pizza look realistic (for a children’s toy). I would have liked to have seen a couple more pizza topping options, just to keep the interest levels, as once they’d decorated the pizza, using all the toppings, then that was it. There was no option to do an alternative flavour.

Once the pizza had been put into the oven and my children even set a timer for when it would ready! They removed it from the oven with the pizza paddle and then used the pizza cutter to slice up the segments and they served it up to my husband and myself. I thought the role-play was really cute and they seemed to have so much fun doing it.

The Casdon Ooni Pizza Oven is a mini replica of the iconic Ooni Koda 16 pizza oven and I’ve got to hand it to Casdon, they’ve done a great job with replicating this pizza oven, it looks really authentic, particularly with the real flame effect lighting.

The set is marketed at age 3+, which is definitely suitable and I thought that it might be too young for my 6 year old, but he really enjoyed role-playing along with his sister.

The set retails for £25, which I think is a little on the steep side, as once they’d put all the toppings on and put their pizza into the oven to cook, that was about it. As I said before, I think the set would benefit from another couple of topping options, so the children could mix it up a bit and it would prolong their interest. For the price, I would have expected more.

I think this set would make a perfect gift for young children this Christmas, particularly those interested in role-playing and mimicking the adults in their life. I’ll be telling my friends all about it, as a gift idea.
