My partner Steve and I visited Café Rouge in Holborn, Central London yesterday evening. Cafe Rouge is a French restaurant that offers an innovative menu with a different take on classic dishes from the different regions of France from breakfast to dinner and has something to suit everyone.

Upon entering this grand ground floor restaurant in a beautiful period building on Kingsway, we were greeted by a very enthusiastic waitress. Our table was set and ready for us and once seated, we were promptly offered some bread and olives to start with and advice on which wine may go well with which meat or fish. The restaurant itself is very bright and airy with one side having floor to ceiling glass windows. It is only 2 minutes by walk to Holborn tube station and very well connected by several bus routes. Considering that it was only 5:30 on a Tuesday, it was a great sign that most of the tables were occupied.

The wine, bread and olives arrived promptly and although the bread could’ve been a bit fresher, the olives came with gherkins and capers, which was interesting. Whilst taking our order, the waitress mentioned that this restaurant has been renovated very recently. And upon looking around I have to say that they have done a great job modernising the restaurant whilst still maintaining some truly stunning old features like the wooden bar area with lots of wine on display, many different lamp shades which seem to work well and ceiling fans.

Steve and I always share our food so I got to try both Salmon and King Prawns for starters. It would be very difficult to pick which one was better, as both were outstanding. The prawns were a little tough to get out the shells, however they came with a finger wash on the side, and as mentioned they were extremely good. We had Fillet Steak and Leg of Duck for mains. My steak was cooked to perfection and in Steve’s opinion it was one of the best duck dishes he’s ever had. Being sweet toothed I always find it hard to choose which dessert to go for, and therefore opted for their trio of mini desserts. I also tried Steve’s crème brulee and although chocolate fondant was my personal favourite, I would’ve been happy with any of the desserts.

Our next door table had their order mixed up, however we did note the manageress personally coming over to apologies and sorted out the misunderstanding promptly and to their satisfaction.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this Café Rouge to my friends and family, especially when they can deliver such amazing service and food whilst running at almost full capacity.
