Well, how exciting is this and exciting being the operative word as I have built one of this brand’s kits before with my grandchildren and was so excited to try out the Gorilla. As soon as it arrived, I got on to the telephone to my granddaughter and she came round and that was us set for a good couple of hours.

Firstly, I need to point how much I love Build Your Own Kits company. Their kit is so environmentally friendly as it is made using 100% sustainable cardboard and paper, making it eco-friendly too. Also, Build Your Own Kit donate a percentage of their profit to the WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) for every Endangered Animal Mini Build Kit purchased, how amazing is that.

I am always looking to see where a product is designed and made, especially if it is imported over seas. I love the fact that Build Your Own Kits have even thought about this too, please see the information below that I have taken from their website. It makes for great reading and put my mind at ease from a carbon footprint perspective:-

*They are made by our trusted printer partners who use FSC and other sustainable/recycled cardboards. Our packaging is designed to minimise
waste and space during transportation and if produced overseas they are sent to us on a container ship, along with other manufacturers’
products such as computers, washing machines and toys. This is more fuel efficient and better for the environment than flying them here.

*This information is taken directly from the company’s website.

Like the previous product I had, the gorilla is brilliant as there is actually a tab you can slide. Once you have built the gorilla, just slide the tape and the it thumps its chest.

The kit comes with 29 pieces and these are divided up into sections on card. The card is thick and strong and has been made easy to use when taking each piece of the board it is placed on. What I also love about this company is the fact that if you loose a part or even damage one, they will replace it. It does not say if there is a charge for this service, so I would recommend asking.

The mechanics of putting the kit together is easy. No glue is required at all as the pieces just slot together and there is also a two page leaflet which shows and gives you illustrative instructions on how to put the kit together. You can also see how it is put together by clicking on this link

Once the kit has been put together, there is a Press Out Gorilla Stand which is located on the back of the pack, be sure to take it easy when dismantling it. It is very good cardboard, not flimsy and stands up really well. It is informative as it gives the following information about the gorilla along with its Latin name and a fact about it too:-

Type of gorilla and who it was named after
Size
Weight
Diet
Habitat

This makes a great kit to put together with the children, I done this with my 8 year old granddaughter and she absolutely loved it. Whilst putting it together, she asked me lots questions and there is a barcode on the box which allows then to find more cool stuff. She thought it was great that she was playing and building something whilst learning about it along the way. Needless to say, Alexa got asked a lot of questions too.

It says on the box 20 minutes to build the kit but we took longer, that is because we were fact finding on the internet, asking Alexa questions and reading in between. This was great as we were not in a rush and to be honest, it is not about rushing education, it is about having fun whilst learning and she certainly got that.

There is a skill rating on the box too, it says 2.5 out of 5 starts which is about right as I have built one of Build Your Own Kits before.

It encourages sensory play such as eye and hand co-ordination, focus, puzzle solving, touch and feel.

I love the fact that not only is it fun but it is extremely educational and supports STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is also great for cognitive learning.
