Bridgedale have been designing and making socks in the UK for over 100 years and have become perhaps the best known brand of sock made specifically for outdoor activities and whether you’re walking, hiking, trekking, mountaineering, running or skiing there is a sock designed just for you.
We were really pleased when we were asked to review some Bridgedale socks as we are both keen walkers, covering hundreds of miles a year on the local fells. We generally walk three or four times every week, more over the summer months, going out rain or shine – although there has been more rain than sunshine recently!!
Bridgedale make a wide variety of socks to suit a wide range of outdoor activities and we were sent a pair of both the men’s and women’s Hike Ultra Light T2 walking socks to review. The Ultra Light is a lightweight summer sock suitable for warm weather conditions and perfect with the summer walking shoes we are currently wearing, although with the weather we have experienced this weekend it won’t be long before the boots come out of the cupboard again! As soon as we put the socks on we both commented on how comfortable they were and that’s before doing any walking! The sock has a decent amount of padding on the heel and toe areas where it’s needed but the rest of the sock is quite a thin mesh, perfect for keeping the foot cool on longer hikes. The Merino wool and Nylon mix gives a really comfortable, breathable sock that wicks moisture away from the skin and the addition of Lycra ensures a close fit that won’t slip or bunch in your shoe. The socks have anti shock cushioning technology which is exclusive to Bridgedale. This is a loop within a loop, which offers an additional level of impact protection; the inner loop has even more resilience than the outer loop for cushioning when you need it.
I was especially pleased when I saw the sizing of the women’s socks, the large size is for UK sizes 7 to 8.5, it’s a refreshing change to find a company who recognises that women do have feet bigger than a size 7! My feet are a size 8.5 and it is so frustrating that most brands of socks are “one size” which means a size 4 -7 so I usually end up with men’s socks which tend to be wider and not as comfortable a fit. A good pair of hiking socks can make all the difference when you are doing longer walks so it is important that you have well-fitting socks as ill filling ones can cause blisters and discomfort which is the last thing you want on a long walk.
The socks are a crew sock which is ankle length and perfect for use with walking shoes. The heel padding comes up the back of the heel and finishes slightly higher than the back of my walking shoe, meaning the backs of my ankles are protected and comfortable.
The socks come in a variety of sizes, small, medium and large for ladies (size 3 to 8.5) and the men’s are small, medium, large and extra large. (size 3 to 12+) so you will easily find a pair to fit your feet.
We were both really impressed with these socks, they were so comfortable on our 15 mile walk today and neither of us had a blister so we would definitely recommend these socks. My husband currently has a pair of Bridgedale boot socks that are about 10 years old so hopefully these will last just as long!
