GUEST POST: Launch of the County Flowers Map – beautifully charting the UK’s favourite wildflowers by county

Driftwood Designs is launching its County Flowers Map, which beautifully charts the favourite wildflowers across the UK, county by county.

In 2002, conservation charity Plantlife International decided to award a new symbol to each of the UK’s counties: a wildflower chosen by the public of each region. They conducted a survey and asked the residents of each county in the UK to choose their favourite wildflower. The survey demonstrated the passion for plants across the country, even provoking some controversy when two of the original flowers were deemed ‘wrong’ and had to be reselected!

Driftwood’s artist Lizzie Spikes also has a passion for wildflowers; as demonstrated in many of her existing, well-loved designs; so, she used this list as her inspiration for her new large-scale map of British blooms.

The resulting image is a beautiful riot of vibrant colour with the added interest of learning which plants represent the places that you know and love – or which county picked your favourite flowers. It’s also a novel and striking way to map the country from top to bottom and serves as a reminder of its varied landscapes, climates and wildlife.
