Best in Travel 2024, the best destinations, journeys and experiences, for the year ahead and Flight free Europe 80 inspiring and sustainable no fly travel itineraries are two books by Lonely Planet. Lonely Planet have an amazing and inspiring collection of travel and guidebooks.

As a very keen traveller, especially since the pandemic, we as a family feel we work hard to play hard. The world is a huge place and there are just endless places you can put on your bucket list of those you wish to visit and those you simply must.

Coupled with the fact I am an avid reader these two books were a delightful addition to my collection. Both books have bright colourful hardback covers, which help to keep the pages within well protected. Best in Travel for 2024 has fifty destinations for fifty years of travel, on Lonely Planet’s fiftieth anniversary. It covers the top ten Countries, Cities, Regions, best value and Sustainable. Sustainability is a hot topic in 2024 so I was especially keen to read this section of the book. I have to say, I’ve never thought to buy travel books as gifts, but this has really opened my eyes. Especially for a few of our friends who love to travel as much as we do and discover new places to travel is part of the excitement. There are top tips, like how to get there, when to go and what publications will help with further reading to enrich your knowledge of an area. Fascinating stuff, and so many lovely colourful pictures depicting not just the places in terms of scenery, but people, landmarks and where it is on the map.

Flight free Europe is a right treat, full of 80 itineraries across Europe that gave me so many travel ideas it made me my head spin. I think for starters the Glacier Express which paints a glorious picture, a rollercoaster railway trip across the alps. I am so inspired by this book. We also loved English and Scottish Castles and Cathedrals. Each destination has a fact box, which is really helpful. The book is split into trips that take up to one week and then up to two weeks. Trips are broken down with stops and some with recommended pit stops. I was also especially interested in Rome, Puglia and Basilicata by train, as Rome is on my travel list for this year. This book puts a whole new perspective on travelling and opened our eyes to so many possibilities. Seeing routes and reading useful information in one book is invaluable, and the amount of information covered in some 307 pages is astonishing. I think this will become our new travel companion and we may well gift a few copies to some of our travelling friends as feel sure they will love it as much as us. A great addition to my bookshelf, I would highly recommend both books.
