Being of a certain age, I think of Ben Sherman as an iconic British shirt brand with it’s button down collar and back box pleat Growing up in the 1970’s it seemed that every well dressed man owned at least one Ben Sherman shirt and indeed it was an essential part of the mod uniform and continues to be so to this day.

The shirt arrived from Suit Direct packaged minimally, just enough to hold it in shape. It concerns me when shirts have more plastic holding them in place than is actually needed and in the current climate it is good to see a business acting responsibly.

This shirt is regular fit and is available in a wide range of sizes from XS to 4XL. My partner is 6’3” and has a broad frame. He usually wears a size XL so this is what we ordered. I was pleased that when my partner tried it on we found that the shirt is true to size and fitted perfectly. He is very conscious of clothing clinging to his belly and was super happy that the shirt skimmed over this area of concern. It is also a good length for the taller frame so can be worn tucked in or out.

The shirt has long sleeves and is made from pure cotton.  It came in a dark navy blue gingham and is also available in sky, black, bottle green and gold. The fabric is fine and smooth though not as thick as I would have liked for this time of year. It has the traditional button down collar with two buttons on the lapels and one at the centre back of the collar. The cuffs have two buttons with a third securing the opening. The shirt has a curved bottom tail and the back has the Ben Sherman box pleat and locker loop and there is a logo stitched to the edge of the chest pocket. This shirt will be good for a smart casual look, perfect with jeans or could be dressed up and worn with trousers and a jacket and tie for a more polished formal look. My partner wears T-shirts for work so does not wear shirts everyday, so this will make a good addition to his wardrobe and be perfect for many occasions. He says it feels very comfortable and he is very happy to have received it.

I always like to see how clothes stand up to laundering, so I washed the shirt at 30 degrees on a regular cycle and then tumble dried it and it came out looking well. I hate ironing, but this was a dream to press and came up looking crisp and fresh and felt softer than when it arrived.

Suit Direct have a wide range of Ben Sherman and other branded clothing available from T-shirts and shirts to trousers, suits and accessories, many at discounted prices. Their website is definitely worth a look if you are seeking out menswear at reasonable prices.
