The newborn kitten is beautiful little kitty, packaged well, with lots of promise of things it can do, ready to take home to its new home!

When I first saw the product, I was surprised by its size, it’s very small, both the box and the product. The size is about right for my children (2 boys age 3 and 4 and a girl aged 5), though as it fits in her hand without being too clumpy or heavy.

The box itself is well thought out, not only is it not too big for the product, it keeps it safe so it’s not wobbling around and doesn’t leave you with a full recycling bin! Teksta have also given consideration to the age of the kitten as small animals such as dogs and cats should not be separated from their parents until around 8 weeks of age and the box states on the front that the kitten has reached this age and is therefore ready to be taken to its new home.

Once the kitten was out of the box (very easily removed) it was necessary to insert new batteries. Personally, I didn’t see anywhere that it stated it came without except on the instructions inside the box. Cue a frantic search for 2x AAA batteries! On a second inspection it says in small writing on the underneath of the box.

With the batteries now inserted and the toy switched on (I do love and on/off switch) we tested out the kittens functions.

We started out with the walking function. To do this the front legs have to be moved to the walking position. This is quite a stiff movement of the legs but not too stiff for my 5 year old to manage with a bit of effort, but it’s a little too stiff for the boys. The stiffness does also means the legs actually stay in the position! The kitten doesn’t really walk as such, the front legs move and drag along the rear but my children were perfectly happy with the fact that it actually moved! We tried it on both carpet and wooden floor and it worked well on both.

Next was the sitting position, to make her do this, we again had to move the front leg position. When in this mode she sits and meows.

The last position is the beg position. Again it’s another leg position change. When in this mode the kitten moves up and down in a begging motion, meows and makes noise.

The kitten in each mode responds to voice, sounds such as clapping and touch.

If you leave the kitten alone in any of these modes, it will fall asleep and snore! This is a good reminder to switch it off and preserved the batteries.

The instructions state that it is possible to teach the kitten to sing but we haven’t worked out how to do this. The packaging also states that the kitten wiggles her ears and tail, I have seen the tail wiggle but not the ears.

There is another issue with the ears, and that is that they don’t stay on! They are a push fit and unfortunately there seems to be nothing that makes them stay on, so we now have a 1 eared kitten which the boys think is quite entertaining!

The other issue with the kitten is that although at the beginning of using it the legs were stiff, we now have one floppy leg and one less stiff leg, which means that it’s not as easy to keep the kitten in the walk/beg/sit positions/functions.

Overall, for the size, the kitten is packed full of features and my daughter loves playing with it! Out of 5 I would rate this toy a 4.
