Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Jazz and Bo’s Story Review

Reviewed by Lee-Anne McCarthy

We are a house full of dog lovers the prospect of receiving a story from the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home series was very exciting. Caitlin, whose 9, was so excited to read all about the stories of the animals from the Home. When we received the book immediately we were enticed to read with the most beautifully illustrated cover that tugged on the heart strings and we hadn’t read a word of the story.

The story is set at Christmas time and as a result would make a lovely Christmas gift or story to read together on the build up to the exciting day. The book tells the story of Abi and Harry who are brother and sister and rarely see eye to eye especially about getting a pet. Harry desperately wants a dog whereas Abi wants the most adorable kitten. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home seems to provide the perfect solution to this Christmas Conundrum. It’s a lovely story of Christmas wishes and children’s love of animals.

The book throughout is beautifully illustrated harnessing and directing young readers ideas and imaginations. The language that is used has clearly been selected carefully ensuring a child’s full understanding. The chapters are a very manageable length and full of exciting adventures.

The book has lovely additional information about the Dogs home at the back of the book. It educates the reader on the history of the dog’s home and how to look after your very own pet. There are jokes and puzzles also provided that simply and cleverly encourage reading in a young person. You can even follow the recipe provided and make your very own cheddar cheese dog biscuits. Our dog Digger is yet to sample the delights but we will be making them very soon.

Caitlin thought this a lovely book and at 9 it was a book that she found very easy to read. For earlier readers it is an ideal first novel that could be read alongside a parent or independently. Caitlin said she understood the story well and she thought the chapters were a perfect size. Caitlin also liked the information about Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and looks forward to surfing the net to find out more.

Although we’ve just finished this lovely story we are keeping this book on hand to read together as a family during the week before Christmas. It’s definitely a book that makes you smile and encourages that warm fuzzy feeling that is especially important at Christmas time.

Caitlin and I give this book an awesome 5/5.  We can’t wait to purchase some more from the series.

All royalties go to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home – so buying this book can really make a difference helping real-life animals find good homes.
