One of the most iconic family films of all times is The Wizard of Oz. Everybody should know about the Wicked Witch of the West, the Munchkins, Glenda the Good witch and of course the leading lady herself Dorothy and her three faithful friends – Scarecrow, Lion and the Tin Man.
Best known as a musical film starring Judy Garland, various adaptations have been released following this.
Last evening, myself and my three dance mad daughters (aged 16, 14 and 11 years) went to see Ballet Theatre UK’s adaptation of the incredible story at the Capitol theatre, Horsham. Ballet Theatre UK have just celebrated their 10-year anniversary and are going strong with big plans for the future.
From the moment the ballet started, you could feel the energy in the auditorium. The costumes were exactly as you would want them to be and the dancers shone from the moment they appeared on stage. The music fit beautifully with the dancing and it was easy to follow the story throughout the performance. The set was perfect, and I particularly liked the way they illustrated the tornado that took Dorothy to Oz. Once in Oz, the colour appeared on stage and everything came to life on a whole new level. Beautiful vibrant colours were now on display for the Munchkins. Bright red illustrating the poppy fields and wonderful emerald green for the Emerald City.
The first act was around 1 hour and flew past. The story was told wonderfully, and enough time was spent on each aspect of the story but equally, it flowed beautifully. The dancing really was incredible. Dorothy was simply amazing. Her dancing was stunning both on pointe and not. Watching her on pointe in her ruby slippers was just magical.
The Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion were so realistic that you truly believed in them. The Tin Man stood out for me as his whole movement, technique and performance was perfection itself and he really looked like a man made from Tin.
The second act was as good as the first. The Emerald City was delightful, and the story remained easy to follow and beautifully portrayed. The audience were completely captivated with the quality of the dancing and professionalism of everybody on stage. Every single dancer was beautiful, graceful, and a sheer delight to watch.
The Capitol theatre was a lovely venue as usual. Parking is very easy with several options within a few minutes’ walk from the theatre and free of charge in the evening. Staff there are always eager to help and appear very professional. The bar was open selling drinks and snacks ensuring a social evening could be had by all.
I would thoroughly recommend this performance to anyone who enjoys ballet. To see a less conventional ballet performed at such an immensely high standard was an absolute pleasure and worth every single penny. Have a look on the Ballet Theatre UK website and book your tickets to see this incredible show before it is too late.
