Friday night is for enjoying yourself after a long week and that’s exactly what happened last night in The Studio at The Hawth, a small auditorium within the main Crawley based theatre.
Andrew Maxwell, although an Irish standup, has lived in the UK for the last 24 years of his life and concentrates on political comedy and so it was of no surprise to the audience that the majority of the show was based around Brexit.
Andrew makes light of his recent move from North London to coastal Kent where pretty much everyone voted for Brexit, and whose politics are very different from his own. Loving his new neighbours but enjoying their differences he tells of Dave next door who gets angry when he can see France and other enjoyable musings.
There is a great section on the (Irish?!) border and how it may be controlled after Brexit, and funny yet underlying serious scenarios that may come from it. It isn’t just the English and Irish that get ribbed, Italians, French, Germans and Scandinavians all have their personality traits pulled apart in the name of comedy.
After a 15 minute break Andrew returns with stories about his Egyptian Muslim wife and her problems travelling with her through airports, they go separately so he doesn’t get pulled for a “random” bag check, interspersed with some very funny religious tales. Bring on his local Methodist vicar, a former police officer who delivers a sermon like an episode of the Sweeney.
Andrew Maxwell is one of just a few comedians doing regular political comedy, and although we spent our evening laughing a lot of it was thought provoking whether you agreed with his political stance or not. We had a great 2 hours, laughed a lot and I thoroughly recommend getting tickets. We enjoyed his performance at The Hawth in Crawley which is easy to get to and has plenty of free parking. The bar area is comfortable and relaxing and well stocked with both drinks, snacks & ice creams making for a great night out.
