Seeing the Fuzzy Felt set instantly brought back childhood memories to me. Back in the early sixties fuzzy felt was the latest must have toy. The first set I had was just a selection of brightly coloured shapes but I played for hours with it and I can also remember getting the hospital set to play with when I wasn’t very well . A toy must be special to stick in your memory so vividly for so many years.
I wasn’t aware that Fuzzy Felt was still being made. There are so many more sophisticated toys on the market today, but this just shows how the simplest ideas can often be the best and many hours of fun can be had from board and bits of felt. There’s no plastic in this toy. The classics can be enjoyed by children for decades and there’s something rather special about sharing a toy you remember fondly from your childhood with your own children or grandchildren
.
The Fuzzy Felt Farm set that I was asked to review came in a strong, chunky cardboard box that had a deep pull out drawer with compartments to store all the felt pieces in. The main difference between this set and the Fuzzy Felt from my childhood was that the shapes came on full sheets and had to be pressed out , also the felt seemed very thin and poor quality. I would recommend that you press out all the shapes before giving the toy to a young child. Some of the shapes are quite intricate and because the felt is rather thin it would be difficult for a child to do without tearing some of the shapes. It was difficult enough for me to do without tearing anything , there are 350 pieces so this job takes a bit of time.
Once the preparation is done you are ready to start making pictures. There are two boards included in the box, one blue and one green. The felt pieces stick easily to the board background and can be taken off and moved around as much as you like. Some of the felt pieces are in the shape of farm animals like pigs, ducks, goats etc and there are fences, trees, birds and the shapes to make a tractor and trailer there’s also a sheet of different sized eyes to put on the animals. These were quite difficult for tiny hands to place onto the animals as they kept sticking to the fingers. There is a sheet included in the box with some examples of scenes that can be created from the contents of the box or let your imagination run free, an excellent idea for a rainy day and very easy to take with you on holiday. If you are looking for an Easter gift that isn’t chocolate this could be the one Fuzzy Felt can provide hours of creative fun is suitable for girls or boys from age three.
