On Wednesday evening I went along to St Helens Theatre Royal with my mum to watch Regal Entertainments new show Achy Breaky Bride. When I first heard of this show I must admit it wasn’t something I immediately fancied watching. However when I found out Daniel Taylor was in the production I decided to give it a chance as I really enjoyed his recent performance in Blood Brothers at The Lowry.

The story is set in Dolly’s Dream Dresses, a boutique bridal shop in St Helens. The main characters were Radio City’s Leanne Campbell playing the shops owner Jolene, Daniel Taylor as her twin brother Sue and Olivia Sloyan as shop worker Faye, all of these actors were absolutely superb, each and everyone of them giving outstanding, believable performances. As the show went on we met many of the shops customers, all played by Crissy Rock, Jenna Sian O’Hara and Emma Vaudrey. Then rounding off this cast were the brilliant Joshua Ford as Hank and Divina De Campo as Breathless and Mikey. All the cast were excellent but it did feel like they were let down by a decidedly average script. There was very little story to the play and far too much swearing for my liking. It felt like the bad language was unnecessary, I also thought that a lot of the jokes just weren’t that funny and played on tired stereotypes in order to gain cheap laughs. In fairness however I did appear to be in the minority as most of the theatre were chuckling away, perhaps this just didn’t appeal to my sense of humour.

All in all this is a light-hearted play with great country music (Rhinestone Cowboy, Jolene, Rose Garden and of course, Achy Break Heart) and a wonderful cast. I think this is a show best enjoyed with a group of friends after a few drinks.
