Both my son and I have pale skin which seems to attract biting insects from a mile away! We have tried a lot of different repellents in the past, from super strong Deet based sprays to gentle Citronella type wristbands but we still get bitten and have to partner our repellents with oral antihistamines to keep the effects to a minimum.
I’m willing to give any repellent a try to see if it works for us, so I was really pleased to be offered the chance to try A. Vogel’s Herbal Insect Repellent Spray. Suitable for all the family, age 4 and over, it is Deet free, instead containing a mix of essentials oils, so gentler on the skin. When the package arrived, I found the repellent to be in a small branded white box with green leaves on the front. It clearly states that’s its herbal, deet free and repels mosquitoes and midges on the front, with directions for use, ingredients and general advice on the sides. On the back there is a photo of the Neem tree, together with a detailed description of the tree and how it’s used.
Inside the box is the perfect travel size 50ml pump dispenser with the same branding. It also tells you a bit about one of the active ingredients, Neem. Neem leaves, seeds & oil come from the Neem tree, an Indian tree highly used in Indian culture for health reasons. Neem works in two ways; it changes the taste of the skin deterring insects from & biting & it also masks the smell of your body odour so the insects can find you and land so easily. Sounds great, but does it work?
We took our A Vogel Herbal Spray on a two week holiday around Europe & the Balkans where we not only spent a lot of time on the lake, a known breeding ground for mosquitoes, it was ridiculously hot and humid meaning we would normally be covered in bites. A brilliant size for popping in my handbag, I took the spray out day & night, and incredibly we didn’t get a single bite for the first week and literally only 2 or 3 in week two. It has an interesting smell which is hard to describe, definitely more savoury than sweet, as the mix of Eucalyptus, Rosemary & Bergamot oils blend with the neem extract. I thought the small bottle would run out quickly but a little goes a long way, we aren’t even halfway through the bottle after our two week trip. I found it to be best applied away from the wind which can carry the spray away from the direction you need it.
A. Vogel Herbal Insect Repellent Spray is definitely now my go to repellent. The bottle is neat and light to carry around, Deet free, so gentle on the skin, and above all actually works. It compares favourably price wise with other repellents too, at circa £6.00 a bottle. Available both online and from most health food stores its really easy to get hold off and is a must have in your holiday packing.
