I can’t be the only person whose garage is a mess, mainly because keeping it organised is my husbands’ department. We have been wanting a garage shelving unit for a while, so are delighted to receive this review.

I was asked to review the BiGDUG BIG430 Red 1980mm High Shelving with Melamine Faced Chipboard Shelves, and it arrived promptly by courier and was very well packed.

I will be honest and admit that my husband did most of the building whilst I supervised and gave unhelpful suggestions. It was a one-person job anyway, and took him around 25 minutes. He would have probably managed it even quicker had the garage been a little tidier to work around so it certainly isn’t a tricky build. I would advise building it in-situ as it is very tall so we would have struggled had we built it in the garden and tried to get it through the garage door.

The instructions are accessible via an online link and very easy to follow. In honesty if you are used to self-build furniture you will find this very straightforward after a quick glance at the instructions.

This structure requires no bolts. It works on a system of studs which are located on the ends of the crossbars, and these insert into “keyholes” within the main red frame. Once in position, you are advised to use a rubber mallet to secure them into position. We didn’t have one so we had to improvise, but we didn’t use a steel hammer as we were concerned this would damage the structure so I would suggest you are more prepared than we were.
Once the frame is built, the wooden shelves fit securely into the grooves created. The base of the frame also has protective plastic feet.

A point to note when building is to ensure that the frame is the correct way around so that the crossbars insert into the keyholes, then drop downwards. As per the instructions you should start at the bottom so that you can calculate the spacing you need between shelves based on what you are planning to store on them.

This unit is top quality, the frame being made from premium-grade European steel and manufactured and certified to FEM standards. It is solid and heavy so that it can hold a good weight (340kg per shelf when uniformly distributed). The unit can be moved and repositioned, and what we really appreciated was that it felt sturdy as we moved it into position within the garage. In the past we have moved various pieces of furniture and felt that it is being weakened as we try to wriggle it along.

The shelves are solid too at 15mm thickness, and we managed to clear a lot of the boxes and paint tins so the garage feels much tidier. You can access the unit from both sides which is useful.

The RRP of £131 is what I would expect for a product of this quality; if you buy it at the current sale price of £99 you are getting a bargain.

I have to mention the Marketing Department as I dealt directly with a lady who was so friendly and efficient, and this would give me confidence to buy from them again. (editor’s note – this was because we were doing a review of the product)

This review is an easy 5/5 stars. My husband wants to buy two more units to create a tidy garage space that feels safer for the children. This unit would actually make a useful gift for any DIY lover, or if your partner spends half his time tinkering around in the garage then this will keep him or her organised.

Rating overall: 5/5 stars
