I am a keen baker and I am eager to encourage future generations of my family to learn and enjoy the skills required to produce home made cakes, so I was delighted to receive the Casdon Kenwood mixer to review. This toy looks just like the real thing and as I have never owned a Kenwood mixer myself I felt quite envious that my granddaughter is going to have the opportunity to play with this at such a young age.

The mixer is packaged in a cardboard box with minimal tissue paper to keep the mixer attachments safe inside. Good to see no added plastic has been used by the manufacturer and that I don’t need an extra trip to the recycling centre.

I hadn’t heard of Casdon before, so I did a little research and found that they are a British family run company based in Blackpool. They have been established since 1946 and specialise in replica toys. Their website says “Our ethos has always been top quality products at an affordable price. Casdon has been renowned for toy innovation for over 75 years and has an unrivalled reputation as a developer of toy replicas, with some of the most prestigious domestic appliance products on the market. Role play toys need to be fun, but they also have a role to playing how children discover, learn and develop. That’s what our Grandfather and father both recognised, and we celebrate their legacy today with every new toy we introduce.”

After unpacking I discovered that the mixer requires 2xAA batteries which were not supplied and a small Phillips screwdriver is needed to open up the battery cavity. The mixer has a K Dough hook and balloon whisk just like the real thing and a spatulas and recipe book are also included. It was easy for me to insert the mixer blade and the manual handle and it was ready to go. The 2 speed motor turns the blade and can be supplemented with the handle.

We were very keen to try out the mixer and chose to make the sponge cake which is one of the 5 recipes included. I helped to weigh out the ingredients and my granddaughter was very eager to do the mixing. Sadly the batteries/motor were not powerful enough to rotate the butter, sugar, flour and egg, so she had to use the manual handle. This took quite some time and caused frustration for my granddaughter who couldn’t understand why she had to turn the handle manually. It was taking so long that I ended up helping out, firstly by using the handle then eventually with a wooden spoon. This was a disappointment for both of us. We did manage to produce a cake, however, it did not rise very much so looked a bit sad. It tasted good and my little one was pleased with the end result.

To summarise in my opinion this mixer is more suited to play than practical cookery, although there are recipes provided. Because the power of the batteries/handle it really isn’t robust enough to bake with. If you are looking for a toy mixer then this looks the part, otherwise I would suggest supervising the use of a real mixer so the results are more predictable.

As Christmas is approaching the Casdon Kenwood mixer is certainly worth a look.
