With Christmas fast approaching one of the main items on my seven-year-old son’s wish list is a new scooter. He got his first ever scooter during lockdown last year and it has been a godsend, he scoots everywhere – school runs and family walks have got so much quicker and are lots more fun, with much less whinging! He has now outgrown his current scooter so has his eyes on a bigger flashier one and it is number one on his list for Santa!

So, when I was asked if I would like to review a Micro Scooter and helmet I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Micro are scooter pioneers with great green credentials and renowned for building quality products that are made to last. They are also the UK’s first carbon neutral scooter retailer.

I was given the option to choose any scooter and helmet from the Micro Scooter website (www.micro-scooters.co.uk/) so I checked it out straightaway and was met with a vast array of different scooters in all shapes and sizes. There were scooters suitable for toddlers up to adults, and everyone in between. But I needn’t have worried about how I was going to narrow the choice down as the website has a handy “scooter adviser” section, where by answering five simple questions (i.e. height of child, can they ride a bike without stabilisers etc) I was shown two scooters which would suit my son the best. In our case it was the Micro Cruiser or the Micro Sprite. I was immediately drawn to the Micro Sprite as it had all the features I would be looking for in a scooter. It had two wheels, was lightweight, foldable and had adjustable handlebars so would grow with him.

The next challenge was to choose the colour and style of Sprite. There were eight different colours to choose from and the choice of a classic, personalised or LED. I found it very difficult to choose as I liked the look of them all but I plumped for the Micro LED Sprite in Aqua which looked amazing and had the added bonus of light up LED wheels which would be perfect for scooting at this time of year when it tends to be darker. This retails at £119.95 and at the time of writing came with a free carry strap, which would normally retail at £9.95.

Next, I had to choose a helmet to go with the scooter which was another challenge as there is a huge range of helmets on the Micro site, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many different helmets in one place and they all looked amazing. It was a tough decision but I went for the children’s deluxe limited-edition football helmet which costs £32.95 and is sure to be a winner with my son who, as well as scooting, loves to play football. This helmet has some brilliant features, it has an integrated rear light which is a great safety feature so will ensure my son is easily seen when he is out and about. It also has a magnetic buckle which is designed to stop you accidentally pinching when doing the helmet up (which I confess I have done on far too many occasions) and my son will be able to do up himself. The helmet is also adjustable and the light doubles up as a dial to adjust the side sliders. I went for a medium which fits heads measuring 54-58cm and will be perfect for my son.

I couldn’t wait for them to be delivered, and I didn’t have long to wait as the package (a very large cardboard box) arrived in super quick time taking just a couple of days (there is free delivery for orders over £49). Inside the box was another box containing the all-important scooter and the helmet, which was very well protected in bubble wrap, and the carry strap in a separate packet.

I was slightly worried that I would have to construct the scooter, but I needn’t have worried as it was folded in the box and ready to go. My first impression was that it was a very good quality scooter, it felt so solid and sturdy but lightweight at the same time. It was very easy to unfold the scooter by pulling the lever on one side and pressing a button on the other, and it clicked into place. The handlebars also fold down to make it compact and were very easy to click into place and out again. There were lots of little extra features as well. There was a solid metal brake which covers the whole back wheel (my son’s current scooter only has a very small flimsy brake and he has gone through at least two pairs of shoes from using it!!) and it also has a fold down leg which is going to be brilliant and hopefully stop my son from just throwing the scooter down when he stops and wants to play. The handlebars can be adjusted to grow with my son and will suit him up until he is 152cm tall so will definitely last a good two or three years. The fact that the scooter is foldable is also a bonus as my son tends to decide that he is tired when he gets to a hill so I end up carrying the scooter for him. Being foldable this will make life so much easier, and the clip-on carry strap is going to make it even easier.

And I nearly forgot to mention the LED wheels on the Micro Sprite. These are really awesome as they use induction energy (created from scooting) into bright white lights in the wheels meaning that no batteries are required. As well as looking great, the light up wheels are another safety feature as they will help to make my son visible.

Overall, I am very impressed with both the scooter and helmet. My son is going to absolutely love them when he opens them on Christmas day and I think it is going to last for a very long time. Micro scooters are more expensive than many other scooters, but they are definitely worth the extra as they are high quality products. Any child opening one of these on Christmas day is going to be very happy!
