My wife and I have just had the pleasure of a wonderful weekend away in Weymouth and the Jurassic Coast. The Regency House Hotel was the destination for some long overdue child-free marriage time and what a treat we had in store.

I’m always hopeful that holidays start right so the excitement and anticipation build up through the experience. Luckily for us, we had a perfect start, with what seemed like the first sunny day this year, we left Exeter and drove the most spectacular driving road up the Jurassic Coast to Weymouth.

Weymouth itself is very easy to get into and around for a coastal town and has good roads.

Turning on to Brunswick Terrace it can’t help but make you smile. It is picturesque to say the least, like a setting in a feel good film, you’re sandwiched between idyllic Georgian Terraces and the sea.

We were both delighted when we saw the hotel for the first time. Greeting us on arrival was the owner, Glyn, who was friendly and funny from the start, settled us in making us both laugh throughout the formalities.

Our room was on the first floor and I was so happy when Glyn went to a room on the front of the property as I knew the sea view was going to be incredible, but I wasn’t expecting to see a grand four poster bed, two leather chairs in the window and all of the usual niceties that you find in top places. The en suite was nice and large, well finished and had everything you could want.

The room only had two points that I could think to improve – the TV was very small for the room, which wasn’t issue for us but could be on a wet week or weekend. The art on the wall was not to our taste, but again, a minor little point that had no bearing on our enjoyment.

Glyn (and Carol who we met the following morning) are lovely hosts and made us feel like the only people there, despite the fact they had visiting family from the Midlands.

As this was our first trip to Weymouth (not including childhood holidays) we were grateful to receive some help on where to go for dinner that evening and what to do the following day. We were also presented with local guides of Weymouth and the local area to help plan excursions if we wanted to.

The restaurant Glyn recommended, only a 5-10 minute walk away, was so good we stayed in the bar after our meal and didn’t even make it to town as we thought we might.

Another plus of the Regency House Hotel is you can sit for breakfast between 8.30-9.00 rather than 8.00-8.30 at many B&B’s. We certainly appreciated that in the morning. When we arrived for breakfast juice was already poured and Glyn was in quickly to take our drink orders and hot food preferences. I was very pleased to hear of the veggie option including veggie sausages – small things but make a difference. While we waited I had muesli from the well-stocked cereal table and helped myself to the filter coffee that was brewing away.

The cooked breakfast was very pleasant and as there was no rush to move quickly, more coffee could be consumed at leisure. When we finished there was still over an hour of time to chill before kick out time at 11.00.

Weymouth and the surrounding area has so much to offer and we were very keen to see some sights on a slow drive home and chose to visit the historic island of Portland with incredible scenery and views and plenty of art and museums. We stopped off at Tout Quarry where a group of Dutch sculptors visited and sculpted the quarry stones into fantastic pieces where they stood. It was a wonderful end to a brilliant weekend.
