We received a rather unusual product to review recently. I didn’t really know what to expect, however when I opened up the packaging I found a large advent calendar with seasonal decorations and pictures of mystery coffee jars. The box promises 44 flavoured coffee sticks and 2 x 50g jars of flavoured coffee as well! If you can do maths, then you’ll note like we did that there are 46 items included in this calendar. When we started opening the doors we realised there were 2 of the 2g sticks in 23 of the doors, and both sticks were different flavours each day. 1 stick makes 1 mug of coffee, so not including the 2 jars you get there you can make 44 cups of coffee with this calendar!
The advent calendar doesn’t tell you the flavours that you’ll get but we made a reasonable assumption that they would all be quite festive. We discovered that the calendar contained sticks of nutty hazelnut, double chocolate, creamy caramel, chocolate orange, cookie dough, very vanilla, mint chocolate, amaretto almond, coconut delight, Irish cream, and cinnamon hazelnut. The 2 jars were caramel popcorn and Christmas pudding. A lovely festive selection to keep us going over the Christmas period and beyond.
Beanies coffee is manufactured in the UK, in County Durham. The instant coffee is all vegan and vegetarian, and whilst they taste sweet, they don’t contain any sugar, dextrose, fructose, artificial sweeteners or syrups, which is pretty amazing. The coffees are gluten free and do not contain nuts. Each jar makes around 25 cups of coffee. You may wonder how these coffees can be flavoured with such sweet flavours. Normally flavoured instant coffee granules are coated in the flavour however Beanies do things slightly differently, by infusing the flavour into the granule. This gives a greater depth of flavour.
If you’re a connoisseur of barista coffee from a coffee shop, with flavoured syrups, then particularly whilst we can’t get out and about so much then these coffees are a good alternative. Opening the coffees gives you a very heady aroma, which is very sweet. This sweet smell helps to trick your brain into thinking that what you’re drinking is as sweet as how it smells, which is quite clever!
Some of the coffees require milk, and some are definitely better without. You can experiment with the amount of coffee to increase the flavour, so it’s customisable to your personal taste, or you could add sugar/sweetener if you wanted them a little sweeter. As with any flavoured drink like this, bear in mind that they do smell stronger than they taste, like fruit tea, but with this coffee the taste builds up as you drink it. It’s not a premium coffee bean, however for 2 calories a cup these are a nice treat. The advent calendar is nicely presented and this would make an excellent present for any coffee lover out there, or just as a treat for yourself. You could also turn them into iced coffee too, for something a bit different!
