Cazcabel Honey Tequila Review

Reviewed by Allison Bretherton
I’m not usually a great tequila lover, so I was unsure what to expect when chosen to review Cazcabel’s Honey version of this popular drink. However, once I received the beautiful bottle, I was very keen to get it open and taste test the golden liquid within!
The bottle itself is a delight; decorated with Mexican mountains and native plants. Its cork stopper is sealed with plastic, easily removed via a perforated strip.
Cazcabel tequila is created in an independent micro distillery in the town of Arandas, located in the highlands of the Jalisco mountains in Mexico. The company produces a range of different flavoured tequilas. Based on the dry blanco version, Cazcabel Honey adds a dose of sweet nectar to the blend. The honey used in Cazcabel Honey is made with a combination of Manuka and Yucàtan honey sourced from the fields of Yucàtan in Mexico and the Manuka trees of New Zealand.
The Cazcabel company has an interesting website which gives suggestions for serving each of their tequila blends. Having done my research, I was ready for the taste test!
First of all, I tried the drink neat in shot glass. I took a sniff; the aroma has a strong, sweet and quite overpowering honey note. I tried a couple of sips… wow! Strong stuff! (Well, it is 34%, so no surprise, really!). So, you get the initial hit of alcohol, but then you get the sweet, syrupy honey coming through, giving a wonderful, warm, toffee-like comforting sensation in the mouth. However, drinking this neat was a bit too overpoweringly sweet for me, so I thought I would try out some of the cocktail suggestions.
First, I tried a Mielito, which is the Cazcabel Honey tequila served with lime wedges, mint and soda (served in a long glass). This was great! The lime cuts through the syrupy sweetness of the alcohol, and the soda water makes a lovely fizzy drink, which would be perfect for the summertime.
Next, I rustled up a Honey Fizz, which is more or less the same as a Mielito, but with half and half soda water and lemonade (I wasn’t so keen on this one, the lemonade was a bit too sweet…).
Finally, I mixed myself a Mañana, which needs some lemon juice, angostura bitters, and ginger beer. I chucked in some more lime wedges for extra zing. This was my favourite of the three cocktails I tried. The combination of the ginger beer and the honey tequila was a real winner and made a perfect winter cocktail. (By this time I was dancing happily round the kitchen, by the way….).
Cazcabel Tequila has been awarded Gold at the World Spirit Awards and International Spirit Awards, as well as, 3 Gold Stars at the Great Taste Awards. The company uses sustainable methods of production, planting new agaves each year and using naturally occurring yeast in their fermentation process.
Overall, I think this is an interesting variation on the standard tequila drink, and it would make a brilliant gift for Mother’s Day this year (definitely more fun for your Mum than flowers or chocolates!).
