Capsule Chix Ultimix Review

Reviewed by Louise Totton

We had a fantastic time this summer reviewing our Capsule Chix sets – the girls loved them and we thought they were great fun. If you missed the review earlier in the year, Capsule Chix are modular little Android girl dolls which come in a vending machine. The vending machines dispense little blind-bag pods, each of which contain a component part of a complete doll – one vending machine will make one complete doll. What we loved about them was that they were available in four different themes, each with their own distinct style: Sweet Circuits, Ram Rocks, Giga Glam and CTRL+ALT+MAGIC, and the components can be fully mixed and matched to create some very cool and unique looks – there are actually over 4 billion different combinations, so the kids have spent hours playing with them.

Well, now Capsule Chix also have their ‘Ultimix’ version. This one has the same principle but works a little differently. There is still a vending machine which contains a number of little pods that make up complete dolls, but this time instead of each machine making one complete doll from a range, there are components from all four ranges in the one vending machine. So, one vending machine contains parts for four different dolls, and these ones are exclusive to Ultimix and there are some super-cool metallic accessories and fabrics which are also compatible with your standard Capsule Chix dolls.

Using the vending machines is great fun and it’s definitely one of the most fun aspects of the whole product. After punching through a section on the front of the box so you can access your capsules, the fun begins! The plastic dial is turned just like the little surprise pod vending machines and out pops one of your capsules. Whereas the original Capsule Chix dolls had colour coded vending machines, the Ultimix have colour coded capsules so once the capsule drops into the landing zone, you can identify which range the contents of the pod belongs to. The purple is Giga Glam, turquoise is CTRL+ALT+MAGIC, the pink is Sweet Circuits and yellow is Ram Rocks.

There are twenty capsules contained in the vending machine, so five capsules per doll. Each doll is made up from 15 component parts and we absolutely love how they look. Assembling them is great fun, and you can either keep your dolls coordinated and assemble them within their colour coded range or get creative and make up your own looks and combinations, and the best is that once you’ve built them, you don’t need to stick with your creations. They can be taken apart and swapped around as many times as you like, and the quality of the pieces is good enough that they’ll stand up to all that swapping and changing.

We loved that the dolls have 14 points of articulation too and the girls have loved posing them and putting on a fashion show. Just like the original dolls, the pods also transform into a stand for the dolls and the kids have loved putting them on their stands for safe keeping once they have the combinations just right. Because there are so many special finishes with these dolls, they look particularly cool once they’re assembled and it’s nice to have these pieces to add to the dolls that we already had.

The Ultimix is a little different to the main Capsule Chix collection in that whilst you don’t know what you will find in each capsule, the overall contents of the box are fixed. The set is designed to have the component parts and outfits of four specific dolls, so you will only need to buy this set once and won’t spend forever and a small fortune trying to collect the whole thing – it’s already in the box in its entirety.

We also really liked that the pods can be put back together and popped back into the dispenser and recycled, whether that be with the Capsule Chix items again or with other items and trinkets that the kids might want to put in.

This is a fabulous set and my girls have had great fun with it. They are 7 and 10, and Capsule Chix are perfect for kids of this age. They have had a wonderful time swapping outfits, hairstyles and accessories to create some truly unique characters. This set would make a fabulous Christmas present for kids ages 6+, and I think any girls up to the age of around 12 would thoroughly enjoy them.
