Jokers Wild Series 2 DVD Review

Jokers Wild
The Complete Second Series

Reviewed by Brian Grehan

Jokers Wild was a comedy panel show that ran from 1969 to 1974. Hosted by Barry Cryer and featuring comedy giants such as Les Dawson Eric Sykes and Arthur Askey.

The idea of the game was for the host, Barry Cryer, to present each comic with a topic with which they would tell a joke relating to the topic. If a member of the opposing team knew the joke they could interrupt and finish the joke themselves.

This second season dates from 1970 with the host, Ted Ray, Ray Martine, Arthur Askey and Les Dawson constant throughout. Although for the last 4 episodes Ted Ray is replaced by Alfred Marx. Some of the jokes are corny and just not funny. Especially any jokes delivered by Ray Martine who looked decidedly uncomfortable in a television studio.

The star of the show for me was Les Dawson who had the other comics and the studio audience in stitches! Another highlight of this second season is the guest appearance of Eric Sykes. I was laughing out loud when he and Alfred Marx delivered a brilliant joke and is worth watching the DVD for this comic gem!

Jokers Wild ran for 8 seasons and season 2 is available on DVD for the first time. A bit nostalgic but has enough highlights for the comic connoisseur.

Rating: 3/5
