Elmer the Patchwork Elephant at The Lowry Manchester Review

19-21 February 2019

My son, Oliver (age 5), and I attended Elmer the Patchwork Elephant live at The Lowry theatre yesterday. My son is a huge fan of the books written by David McKee and was “super excited” to see the show. My son is a keen theatre goer, so wanted to help write this review.

Elmer the Elephant is different to your usual grey elephant you would come across, Elmer is patchwork coloured! Although he is different from the other elephants, he has a bright and colourful personality to match his colourful exterior. Elmer brightens everyone’s day by putting them all in a good mood.

However, one day Elmer gets tired of being different and tries to blend in with the rest of the herd. What he doesn’t realise until later is that his friends value him for his uniqueness and love that he is different.

The subtle message of the show is that we should always be ourselves and try to be happy with what we were born with. I think this is such a good message to be sending to children, especially in the days of social media, which our children are growing up amongst. This 1989 children’s story is sending out positive messages to our children still today.

Oliver told me that he loved watching the show and he really enjoyed it. It was on for around an hour, which was a good length, especially for the smaller members of the audience.

The puppeteers were very good and kept the audience engaged which their enthusiasm and entertaining story.

We had a great day out at The Lowry watching Elmer and would rate this show 4/5.

Rating: 4/5
