Buddy tells the story of how Buddy Holly struggled to get away from country and western music to make it as a number one rock in roll recording artist with his band The Crickets. How this slightly geeky but hard working and determined musician ignored racial divisions to make history in less than just two years and create a legacy that still lives on today.
With such recognisable and much loved songs the cast of musicians did a fantastic job of portraying Buddy and The Crickets as well as a few of their friends in the business. Glen Joseph that played Buddy was excellent as the man you made geek cool. You could really feel the enthusiasm hard working and determination of Buddy. Joe Butler also played Joe B Maulin on the drums well.
The simple but well adapted stage setting and costumes worked well. They were very in keeping but subtle which meant that all attention was on the Buddy and The Crickets story and the songs that made them so successful.
The Festival Theatre is a modern extremely spacious theatre with a choice of bars on each floor and helpful, friendly staff. It is a very nice space to have drinks pre, during and post show. The theatre is located in the city centre which means it is easily accessible by public transport and is surrounded by on street parking as well as an array or bars and restaurants for pre and post show drinks and food.
I enjoyed my evening at the Festival Theatre watching very talented musicians and listening to some incredible songs. I would give the evening 3 out of 5 and would recommend to friends and family especially those Buddy Holly fans out there.
