A few minutes walk from Clapham high street tub/rail station in a lively area, is the award winning bar/restaurant Aqqum. Opened in 2009, Aquum has just undergone a revamp and I was lucky enough to experience the results of the refurbishment!

I walked in to a very large bar which was chic and consisting of 3 floors. The décor is fantastic with mood lighting, comfortable seating and dance floors. I liked the lighting and the disco balls!

The actual bar area looked very impressive and I noticed raw stone an onyx in the bar area. There are also 2 additional floors, one of which has a private area, suitable for private dining, additional bars and a smaller dance floor. I mainly stayed on the ground floor and enjoyed the music they played which was club like.

In addition to the physical refurbishment, the revamp also included the addition of a new food menu, which specializes in Greek Cuisine. The new chef, Anastasios Tologlou, was previously at London restaurants Medlar and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, as head chef. His inspiration comes from the cuisines of the Greek islands and the menu is a mix of sharing plates, light dishes and grilled meats.

I sampled some of the sharing plates, which I found to be very tasty and great for some light bites. The Aubergine spread consisting of smoked aubergine, tomato and lemon was a dish I had never seen before and was delicious! The Tziatziki Taramasalata and grilled meats that I tried were also yummy! The menu has lots of variety and sharing platters, which is always a great way of trying new dishes.

I was looking forward to sampling the new cocktail menu, which has been revamped and had high expectations after perusing the menu. I am pleased to say that the cocktails exceeded my highest expectations! The cocktails were wonderfully made and beautifully presented! After tasting several cocktails from the extensive menu, I can state that I have not had better cocktails anywhere else. You will be hard pressed to find better cocktails like this!

If you like chocolate then I highly recommend the Chocolate Martini which consists of Vanilla Vodka, Crème de Cacao, Butterscotch, Chocolate milk and Cream, served with served with an After Eight mint! This was easily one of the best cocktails I have ever had and I will be returning to Aqqum to have this again! While the drinks are not cheap, they are in-line with standard London prices (around £9) and well worth it!

The bartenders are clearly very talented and the staff are very friendly, especially server Danny who was extremely knowledgeable about the selection and very upbeat and friendly, serving us quickly and efficiently.

If you are seeking a place to with fantastic drinks, nibbles and dance in South London, then look no further than Aquum!

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
