I took my three year old grandson, Oliver, to The Lowry theatre to watch Scamp Theatre’s adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much loved book, Stick Man. Oliver was very excited at the prospect as he has been to The Lowry several times to watch various productions and always has an wonderful time. It always amazes me how a bundle of energy like my grandson can sit so still and watch the show, completely engrossed by the performance and loving every moment.
We sat down in the packed out audience of young children and their carers, and prepared to have a great hour’s entertainment. Oliver sat open mouthed from the moment the three actors came onto the stage, singing, dancing, telling jokes and performing the story of Stick Man’s adventures.
The actors use a variety of simple props from umbrellas to beach balls and swim rings as they perform the story of Stick Man’s journey to find his way back to the family tree. Poor Stick Man went from one disastrous situation to another as he was chased by a dog, used to make a nest and even became fire wood. Eventually he was rescued by Santa and found his way home to his loved ones. When the trio of actors came into the audience, with the dog chasing after Stick Man, the young audience went wild. There is a lot of interaction between the performers and the children and this really makes the show so entertaining and special.
If you have young children and want to do something a little bit different, please try to catch this show. You will love every second.
