I’m familiar with Andy Hamilton’s work on TV and radio, in particular his writing and various performances on Radio 4 so I was looking forward to seeing him in a live performance.
The show began with some “market research” and quickly established that half the audience were Radio 4 listeners, whether this made any difference to the themes discussed I’m not sure but it certainly got the night off to a good start.
In this show “Change Management” Andy takes a look at his childhood in post war London and compares his life then with that of modern children, growing up in today’s technological world. He talks about the current trend of making up names for children which I found quite amusing as I am a Cub Scout leader and have come across some very strange names over the years.
He takes us back to his childhood in post war Britain and the attraction of bombsites in post war London. He makes fun of himself in a light hearted manner and the show is full of anecdotes from both his personal life and the world of entertainment. There were plenty of amusing tales and the audience were soon laughing out loud. Andy’s humour is thoughtful and educated and you can see why he is such a popular entertainer.
The evening ended in the style of “I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue” with Andy leading the audience in a rendition of “Ging Gang Goolie” to the tune of “Deutschland über alles.” This was a fitting finale and brought a final smile to everyone’s face.
The Quays Theatre at the Lowry is a superb venue, small enough that you are close to the stage but big enough for a decent atmosphere. The seating is comfortable with plenty of legroom and all seats have a good view of the stage. The Lowry is very easy to get to as it is just off the M602 motorway and there is plenty of parking in the large multi storey car park next to the theatre. If you eat in one of the restaurants at The Lowry Centre next door you can park for free, otherwise it costs around £5.50.
We had a lovely evening out and would certainly recommend that you see the show.
