Confessions of a Mother Inferior by Ericka Waller Review

Reviewed by Jo Flaherty
Peta is your normal school-run mum… well, as normal as you could expect with three young children in tow, an increasingly absent husband and a job her heart’s just not in.
Ericka Waller paints a real honest-to-goodness tale of family life with small children, and characters from the school gate that most parents will recognise from their own lives. There are some real laugh-out-loud moments in the book which segue seamlessly into heart-achingly poignant moments. Waller writes from the heart and it shows. The characters are well rounded and full of vitality, really bringing the novel to life. With every situation Peta encounters it’s hard to see how things will get better for her without first getting a whole lot worse. You find yourself rooting for Peta when life seems to be dealing her blow after rough blow and her children are hilarious, endearing and believable. I really wanted to know what was going to happen for the central characters, but even those on the periphery play their part in developing the plot.
Not your run-of-the-mill chick lit, Waller covers bereavement, heartache and the often ridiculousness of what life throws at you, with good humour and a light touch. The novel has all the makings required for a sequel or even a series and I, for one, will be buying. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
