Having a toddler it has been a long time since I had any me time, so I was looking forward to visiting the 5* Le Kalon Spa in Kensington, and enjoying the Hammam & Massage package via Groupon (with massive savings by buying through www.groupon.co.uk).
The Bentley Hotel is a five star hotel in a convenient location only 2 minutes’ walk from Gloucester Road Tube, 3 stops on the Underground from London Victoria. From the moment you arrive at the hotel and the doorman rushes to open the door you know you will be getting excellent service. As I was early the receptionist provided me with wifi details to check my emails while I waited which was a nice touch.
I was soon being shown down to the spa which is in the basement of the hotel. On arrival the therapist, Melissa, asked me to complete a form noting down any allergies or problem areas that could be an issue during treatment, she then showed me to the changing area. The whole spa area is decorated with marble and fine furnishings and the changing areas are no exception with the touches you expect such as lockers, robes and hairdryers to hand. There is also a shower and sauna which I decided to make use of before my hammam.
After ten minutes Melissa kindly came and got me showed me to the hammam and told me what I would be doing for the next hour or so until I felt completely at ease. I had never used the hammam before so she explained how to use it, provided me with fresh towels and bottled water and let me know she would prompt me when 25 minutes was up so I could finish off, come out and relax before the massage. The hammam is similar to a very large marble steam room and is so thick with steam it’s disorientating at first. But lay down on the soft towels in the centre, let the steam do its work and you are soon totally relaxed. I used the exfoliating mitt and soap left for me and gave myself a really good scrub which felt great. Before I knew it the 25 minutes was up and it was time to cool down for ten minutes or so before the massage. Lucky that water is provided as I drunk a whole bottle down in one.
Melissa also did the massage and she was absolutely excellent, so often massages are too soft and you don’t feel the benefit, but with this one I certainly did. I was asked which areas I wanted concentrated on and which areas, if any, I wanted left alone. I felt totally relaxed at all times, even as the knots were worked out of my shoulders. My skin felt lovely and soft after the exfoliation and massage even my husband commented on how good it looked which has to be a first!
After 30 minutes I felt ten times better and really didn’t want to get up. But it was sadly time to shower, get dressed and hit the manic streets of London which seemed a world away from the tranquillity of the spa.If you can manage to get a few hours to yourself I really recommend the spa package at Le Kalon Spa. It’s smart, clean and quiet, the facilities are good and the hammam and massage excellent. I just wish I had time to sample the cream tea afterwards as it sounded scrumptious.
A fantastic afternoon out which was great on my own but would also work well with close friends.
