Every year at Christmas we have a traditional fruit cake (baked by my mum) which is our main cake, however not everyone is a fan of this type of cake so we usually have another cake as an alternative. When I was asked to review the Cake Box Snowman Cake I jumped at the chance.

The cake is described as “a charming winter delight decorated with Strawberry Santas and fresh berries” and is a three layer sponge cake filled and decorated with fresh cream. It is available in either chocolate or Victoria sponge.

Cake Box is known for creating egg free cakes decorated with fresh cream. Cake Box was founded in 2008 with one store and have now expanded to over 300 stores, with more opening each year. This year a Cake Box store has opened in our local shopping centre, I’ve walked past a few times and admired the display of cakes inside. Cake Box also have a website where cakes can be ordered either for collection from a store or for home delivery. The cakes are handmade to order in the local store. There are also a limited range of cakes available on the website for courier delivery for those who don’t live near a store.

The Snowman Cake was delivered by hand from our local store, it came in a very large box which I couldn’t wait to open. The Snowman cake didn’t disappoint, it was huge and decorated with fresh cream, bright green whipped cream, desiccated coconut and topped with two Santas made from strawberries and whipped cream. I had chosen the Victoria sponge base. It was on a silver cake board so that it could easily be lifted out of the box. The cake was 12 inches, which is enough to feed 12 people.

The cake was made of three layers of Victoria sponge, with fresh cream in between each layer. It had a lovely light texture and tasted great, the coconut added additional texture. The only downside to the cake was that the bright green cream (of which there was a lot) had an unpleasant bitter taste which unfortunately was the lasting flavour we were left with after eating it. The green colour also stained our fingers, although this did wash off fairly easily. Ironically the cake box stated that the coloured cream may stain and could be bitter to taste, the website also warned against ordering a cake with too much coloured cream for this reason. Whilst the coloured cream looks impressive, it seems strange that it is put on cakes when it doesn’t taste nice. On our subsequent slices we removed the green cream and then enjoyed the cake a lot more.

I also would have liked to see some ingredients and/or allergy information included with the cake. It’s always important to know what’s in a product, especially if received as a gift. Fortunately none of my family have any allergies so it wasn’t a problem.

Overall the Snowman Cake would make a wonderful centrepiece for a Christmas table, it would definitely receive a lot of compliments and be a talking point.

Rating: 4/5 (without the green cream it would be 5/5)
